Default Stamps of Mauritius

I bought the book "Stamps of Mauritius" by Christian le Comte when I
visited the little island last month. It cost me 600 rupies (appr.
13,5 euro).

http://www.christianlecomte.com/chri...fmauritius.htm

Quite enjoyable. I bought some stamps too, and even visited the Post
Museum in Port Louis!

And I enjoyed the Blue Penny Museum as well...

(The museum doesn't seem to have a website.)

How extraordinary!
I was, this weekend, researching a cover, from
a Philatelist in Perth, who I assume was a fan of aerophilia.

His name was Le Comte.
No doubt there are plenty of families of "Le Comte"
but here is a brief history of this one:

Paul Raoul Le Comte, watchmaker and jeweller,
operating from the first floor of the
Bon Marche Arcade in Barrack Street, Perth, Western Australia,
was born in Malta of a French father and
Welsh mother; he stowed away to Fremantle when
he was sixteen. His father was a
professor of the French language at the University of
Malta: that's what it says on his
son's birth certificate. I ask my mother when I am
growing up if Pop spoke with a French accent or
an Australian one. It doesn't matter whom I ask,
nobody can recover his accent from memory.

I wonder if the two stamp collectors are distantly related

Hi Rod.

I definitely remember a Lecomte family in Malta who lived in a town
(Floriana) close to the Capital in the late 50s. They had a kid my age who
went to the same school I did. We used to pronounce his name as Turu
Lakomm -- Maltese for Arthur Lecomte -- and he spoke Maltese like everyone
else. However, I just searched the Maltese surname database but there is no
mention of Lecomte or anything similar.

Sometimes it's scary, the way things are intertwined,
I found a relation of Mr. Lecomte, and she turns
out to be an Assoc Professor specialising in English
Literature.
I have ordered a book of her early reminicences
of Perth, and awaiting delivery,so there may be more history there.
I am guessing Mr Le Comte was born around
early 1900's so your fellow was one generation advanced probably.
Mr. LeComte's cover was dated 1960.

It is well documented of the number of Maltese youths circa 1926,
who were obtaining passports elsewhere, and stowing away to Australia,
so Mr Lecomte was possibly one of many.

The footprints of very early settlers in Western Australia are fading,
but some are carried on in their names.
I was browsing information on a name that is instantly recognisable
here when considering Aussie Rules footballers, the name Krakouer
3 brothers (Aboriginal) who distinguished themselves on the field,
may have a heritage of early Polish settlement, the name deriving
from "Kracow - ers" and native mixed marriages.

Cheers.

Thank you for the link. I had the pleasure of meeting Helen when she
was in London doing her research; I did not know that she has a
website.

I only had a short glimpse of her book "Blue Mauritius"
(http://www.helenmorgan.net/bm/book.html ) when I visited the Blue Penny
Museum in Port Louis. It certainly looked interesting, but there are limits
to how much I could take with me home (ended up with 7 kg overweight)... Can
order it from Amazon later on, though. Would be a nice addition to my little
Mauritius collection. The tiny country sure has an interesting postal
history and many nice stamps as well.
