I think by default it would not be a failure is the $1 bill was eliminated,
since people would have no choice in the matter. But as long as they have a choice, they have voted in overwhelming numbers against the dollar coin. It has occurred to me that two things that were done may have made the situation much worse than it otherwise could have been. the subject of the coin is a near mythical character few Americans have more than a passing knowledge of, much as sba was. Americans are used to seeing dead presidents on their coins. it might have been better to skip the pc nonsense and just select a dead president for the dollar coin. I am also not convinced the gold finish was such a good idea. It gives the coin an almost fake look to it, like many of the third world coins have. Probably not the best thing to do if you want a coin accepted as money. It just does not look like an American coin. "Edward McGrath" wrote in message ... The dollar coin is and always will be a failure, people don't want them. When will they smarten up and just give up on making $1 coins. |

That will be another boondoggle. How often do you get any of the current dollar coins anywhere except at stamp vending machines? In the UK, the 1 pound coin (worth about $1.80) is the size a nickel and has been accepted by the public. Ok the the $1 coin barely circulates lol. Besides I collect $1 bills, starnotes and radar notes and 50/50s. I'd hate to have to start collecting higher valued bills : ) |

If the Susan B's had actually been 12-sided as promised, they may have been more acceptable for the general user. And no need for the larger 'golden' dollar. |

It's only nominally more weighty than quarters, and no one complains about them. It always cracks me up -- the exact same people complain that dollar coins get confused with quarters, and that they're too big and heavy. You can't have it both ways. -- Bob |
