Kris Baker was shot dead this afternoon. She will be buried after the

It's one psycho talking to himself under different names. Too bad each
of the personalities (if such shallow entities can be so termed) can't
all receive separate sentences for harassment, slander, libel,
spreading false information, etc., etc., etc.

It's no crime or tort to spread false information.
If it was, the entire Bush administration and both houses of Congress

Actually it would be a tort but only if defamatory.
If I were to say the sun sets in the east - that would be spreading
false information but not libelous.

for Usenet people, mad at each other for being mean? Can you see the

Yes, but they'd better hurry up, because I'm paying F.Lee Bailey by the
minute, and this is dragging on. My Doomella vs. Doomella forgery case
better be next on the docket. I've already paid for hours of coaching for

which may be understood as being defamatory of their reputation.

It's highly doubtful whether flattering falsehoods about a person
could ever be understood as being defamatory, for instance.

No. In a Civil Court, libellous defamation constitutes a Tort, as
has already been pointed out.

Some but not all US states, as does the UK, make provision for
Criminal Libel, where the libels are so serious or far reaching as to
merit Criminal Sanctions. Fines or imprisonment rather than simply
damages as in the case of Civil Libel, if proved.
