I was once the "Conker" champion, in my street in Somerset.

Robert Paul Smith, an American, wrote a book in 1958 called "How to Do
Nothing with Nobody All Alone By Yourself" -- a book for 1950s children,
who (according to Smith) had too-easy access to mass-produced toys,
television, etc. and had lost the art of the games from the early 1920s
(this is especially amusing to me, as writers who grew up in the 1950s
would make the same argument with respect to children who grew up in the
1980s, and, presumably, so will authors who grew up in the 1980s.)

The book, in addition to detailed instructions on how to play mumbly-peg,
how to make works of art with pussywillows, and numerous other (somewhat
rambling) discussions, explains this same game to the 1950s generation as
a game played by Smith in his youth -- so, it's not just England.

I grew up with this book, which is severely deserving of a reprint.
