YN LITERARY AWARD WINNERS
ANNOUNCED IN BALTIMORE

To encourage young writers to share their research and views on
numismatics, the American Numismatic Association (ANA) recognizes them
each year with awards for literary accomplishments.
At the Young Numismatist (YN) Awards Breakfast, held August 2 during
the Association's 112th Anniversary Convention in Baltimore, the
following award winners were announced:

Abe Kosoff Memorial Literary Award
Presented to the young numismatist who writes the best article or
gives the best talk on a numismatic topic. (Original conclusions are
encouraged, especially when logically presented.)
* First place: Jeffrey Swindling of Jacksonville, Florida, for "The
United States Mint: A Frontier in History"
* Second place: Jon P. Sullivan of Centerville, Tennessee, for "Die
Cracks"
* Third place: Max Spiegel of Brooklyn, New York, for "Private Mints in
Colonial America" displaying in-depth numismatic research and
individual, specialized involvement with the topic. (The article need
not have been published.)
Gould Memorial Literary Award
Presented to the young numismatist who writes the best article
* First place: Jon P. Sullivan of Centerville, Tennessee, for "Wrong
Stock Errors"
* Second place: Jeffrey Swindling of Jacksonville, Florida, for "The
Creation, Continuation and Revocation of the 'Peace Dollar' in
Post-World War I America"
* Third place: not awarded
Ray Byrne Memorial Literary Award
Presented to the young numismatist who writes the best article
displaying in-depth numismatic research and individual, specialized
involvement with the topic. (The article must have been published in
Numismatist, ANA's online Your Newsletter or other recognized
publication.)
* First place: Sean T. Aldrich of Douglas, Massachusetts, for "The
Medallion That Fueled a War" (published in Numismatist)
* Second place: Jon P. Sullivan of Centerville, Tennessee, for
"Chalmer's Silver Tokens" (published in Your Newsletter)
* Third place: Max Spiegel of Brooklyn, New York, for "Money in America:
From Wampum to Coinage" (published in Your Newsletter)
