That's a cool book and has the right format, with
the covers folded back on themselves to give the
different scenes. And the costumes are of the
correct era, but again, the artwork is more
modern. Thanks, though, especially for tracking
down a picture for me.

This sure is one tough nut to crack. I checked
with my mother yesterday, but she doesn't
remember the book (does remember one she had of
a similar format but with animals at a zoo, and
little pull-tabs to reveal or hide them in their
cages). My stepdad, who illustrates childrens
books, suggested a few more key words (die-cut,
cut-out, Victorian, and illustrators Caldecott
and Greenleaf) but I haven't had any luck with
those, yet. My mother will ask the cousin, next
time she talks to her, if she has any clues.

I just realized something: your question might have
been better in rec.arts.books.childrens -- maybe you
should repeat your original post over there, and link
to the google thread with all the replies so far.

I'm confused by something, though: your mother
told you to handle your cousin's book very carefully...
but doesn't remember the book. Does your cousin
still have the book, or more info on it? Sounds like
something various family members should know
about and one of them still own.

Yeah, I was thinking there was probably a better group,
but I like it here When I get the time I'll repeat
the question there, thanks!

It's been 40 years, and I only remember seeing the book
on the one occasion (though surely it was in our house,
with our cousin, for the whole year she lived with us).
It obviously made a much more lasting impression on me
than it did on my mother.

I suspect my cousin does not still have the book; she
doesn't have much of anything that she had when she
was younger, unfortunately. And this particular item
(especially if it's as rare as I'm beginning to suspect)
is something it would be great for another family member
to have, now, but that probably isn't the case. I hope
it has a good home, wherever it went.

Hopefully the cousin will remember some good details,
though.
