A week ago, I bought a copy in Russian of Dostoevsky's Crime
and Punishment. Kiev, 1979. When I opened it, I noticed a
few stamps. I continued to flip pages and there were more
stamps.

Yesterday I organized the stamps, about 200 in all. All
from the Soviet Union, all commemoratives from the years
1973 to 1975, all mint.

Wow! If you don't collect stamps yourself, you might be able to make
enough by selling them to pay for the book... g

Not likely. The Soviet Union was a notorious stamp-mill, pouring out
endless numbers and quantities of pretty--and completely
worthless--commemoratives. Used ones are rarer than mint. You can buy
giant lots of them from stamp companies for just a few dollars.

Not unlike the USA and virtually every other country with a postal
system.
It's no wonder that the stamp collecting hobby is in an inexorable
decline.
