I am looking at railway theme coins, anyone have ideas what I should look
for, whats would be:
the best of the best
the most rare,
most unique
most colourful
the sharpest?

thanks, new to the game, haven't a clue just like railway type coins.

Have you collected tokens? Got to be lots of old interesting tokens
related to the RR.

If you ever decide to collect RR themed stamps, there are loads of them,
some really beautiful ones too.

Tokens and medals. I have/had a few railway themes on some souvenir
halfs,
good fors and commemerative state/town medals.

This is not my auction, but it is one of the best train coins I've seen.
Very creative, and I believe it has won some sort of award too.

One that I like is the Albanian 50 leke coin issued in 1988.
Unfortunately is is BIG (Ø 65 mm!) and fairly expensive :-/ The cute
thing about it is, on either side you see a train coming out of a
tunnel. And that tunnel is ... a hole in the coin.

I have quite a few RR coins but have also picked up RR medals pretty
cheaply (some of them are 3 or 4 inches across). As a supplement I
like to buy stock certificates from the RR that have really nice
vigenettes of RR activities or just trains in general. It all comes
together to make a nice looking collection.

Sounds excellent, Christian, very clever! Like Cliff I have at least a
passing interest in railroad memorabilia and RR themed items. I've got
an 0 gauge Lionel set-up and a plethora of accessories, some B&O China,
platters, sugar bowls and such, and in a place of honor in my dining
room, a menu from a chartered excursion, 1926 on the B&O.

I'm surprised that no RR image has yet made it to the SQ program.

I got a San Francisco Railway Fare Token laying around somewhere ... pretty
interesting, there are two "holes" punched in the shapes of a "S" and a "F" in
it.
