sobering thought

I was just looking up something quite unconnected in the City of London Pevsner and learned that the bombing around St. Paul's which hit Paternoster Row on December 29 1940 also destroyed *six million* books. There is a well-known photograph of three men browsing the roofless and debris-clogged Holland House library, in Kensington, following a fire-bombing on October 22, 1940. You can see it he http://www.uta.edu/english/V/multime...llandhouse.jpg (In Alberto Manguel's "A History of Reading," where this photo is reproduced on pp 304-5, the only credit given is the permission from the Imperial War Museum.) -- Jon Meyers [To reply, lose your way.] |
