New Countries Joining Euro
I've read that in 2004 some countries are eligible to join the Euro...
Does anyone know if any countries will adopt the currency in January 2004? Or will that be later in the year? Also does anyone know who's joining? So far I've heard Yugoslavia can reapply in 2004. Poland is joining, and some of the baltics. But I'm not entirely sure which countries. Colleen |

Ten countries will join the European Union on 1-May-2004. Until then, they are only partly involved; for example, the ten are already represented in the European Parliament but their MEPs currently have an observer status. Their governments take part in European Council meetings, are involved in the discussion of the draft EU constitution and so on. But officially they will not join the EU until May 1. Also does anyone know who's joining? Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Note, however, that joining the EU is _not_ the same as adopting the euro. A country that plans to join the currency union has to meet various criteria. For example, it has to participate in the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM-II) for at least two years. So don't expect any of those ten new member states to introduce the euro before, say, 2006. So far I've heard Yugoslavia can reapply in 2004. Yugoslavia as such does not exist any more; the country is now officially called "Serbia and Montenegro". No idea if/when it joins the European Union, though. Christian |

Well, they're not joining the EU until May 1st anyway, but they have to be in the ERM for a few years before they're eligible to join the euro, so don't expect any of them to switch until 2007-2010 depending on local conditions. Also does anyone know who's joining? Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta, and Cyprus. So far I've heard Yugoslavia can reapply in 2004. No. Some of them, e.g. Estonian Kroon, Lithuanian Litas, have their value tied to the euro, previously the DM, but they don't actually use the euro yet. The only places which use it as you describe are Montenegro and Kosovo. -- Arwel Parry http://www.cartref.demon.co.uk/ |

Is Montenegro using DM denominated currency? I know they are still tied to Serbia in a federation, though the country recently changed it's name from the oxymoronic "Yugoslavia" to the more appropriate Serbia and Montenegro. Estonia and Lithuania, for example, have some kind of currency board arrangement. They have their own currencies (the Estonian kroon, formerly "tied" to the DEM, and the Lithuanian litas, formerly "tied" to the USD) but issue their own coins and notes. There are also some "third countries" and areas which either have similar currency boards or even use the euro without being part of the EU or Euroland: Andorra, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Montenegro ... "Padraic Brown" wrote in message What about the Duchy of Grand Fenwick? They switched over as well, after much debate, to be sure! Their E2 piece has a bottle of Pinot in a wreath design. The E1 depicts the ruler on the Ducal Bicycle. Happily, they didn't fall prey to inscribing "Two Euros" on the national side the way so many other countries have! Padraic. You would think they would still be using dollars after all the rich payouts from Uncle Sam. They really need to refilm that movie again, but this time it is the Republic of Iraq.
