Are coins a good long term investment? Also, what coins today,if any, might
be undervalued?

I recently read a study that concluded that coins are not a good long
term investment compared to stocks, real estate, etc.
The coin market is currently extremely bullish.
I've been collecting long enough to know that no bull market lasts
indefinitely.
Modern commemoratives and other modern issues probably won't
appreciate at a high rate (there are exceptions, of course).
Truly rare US coins will probably hold their value against inflation.

Only if the price "guides" reflect what collectors are having to pay for
them. Otherwise, it's charge 4X list when selling to the knowledgeable
collector and pay X/2 to the heirs when buying, no matter what instructions
that collector might have left behind.

I agree that they are not really a long term investment. On top of that,
I think you'd be buying in at the top of the market.

Looking at all the investment classes out there, and speaking as a
confirmed "value" investor, this is the time to be buying stock in
undervalued companies.

A related question might be how far things can be considered
investments.

The case against is a complex one and its relevance depends a lot on
what you mean by an investment. Most folks think that investments are
things that earn a return or increase in value. There is a sense in
which coins made from precious metals define value. Even so, they
don't usually change in size or provide you with small children that
grow into new coins.

Some would argue that seeing an undervalued asset, purchasing it and
holding it until its true value is realized is investing. In that
sense some might see coins as an investment. Even so, there is no
reason to expect true stability or that trends persist in the coin
market. One of the central reasons for this is that there are far
more coins than collectors (and very many new ones continue to enter
the market).

Collectors that fail to make money risk becoming discouraged and
leaving the hobby. This is serious since only an increase in
collectors can lead to an increase in the part of the price that is
due to rarity or pressure from the market made by collectors.

For coins made from precious metals, there is separate pressure from
the metals market that can elevate the price of those coins. It is
not clear that these two markets are entirely unrelated.

Since there are also expenses involved in owning coins, unless there
is a real prospect of buying coins that are very likely to appreciate
it is hard to see coin collecting primarily as an investment. If you
like the coins, it may turn out to be a good investment, but this is
by no means guaranteed.

What? Are you saying coin dealers are unscrupulous?
That's just a whisper away from libel!

That you needed to ask this question indicates you should stay far away from
the rare coin business.

IMHO coins should be collected as a pleasurable pastime and hobby.
If you study the coins you like to collect, you will gain knowldge
about the country that issued them, their method of manufacture and
their market value.

I have no intention of going into the rare coin business. As a beginner in
this "hobby" I merely asked what I beleived to be a valid question.
