Ha! In this context it means "International Phonetic Alphabet". It
assigns a single symbol to any given sound. In theory, if you know
which symbol goes with which sound you can transcribe an utterance in
another language.


Yep, I know - that is what most dictionaries here use, and we had IPA at
school. (Well, I can read it but not really write it.) But I liked the
ale variety g.
