Good friends launched the lifebelt
Thanks Jill.

Just in case no-one else has answered your Italian query - the PM and
GNR stamps are listed in SG, at the end of Italy. The PM stamps are
listed under Military Post Stamps M583-M602. The GNR stamps are listed
under Italian Social Republic, including Express Letter Stamps and
Postage Due Stamps. If you want to know what the initials stand for,
check out
http://www.askphil.org
Go to Reference Library, then Glossary of Stamp Collecting Terms - all
sorts of interesting initials to be found there. (PM no.3)

The Italian Social Republic, governed by Mussolini
with the support of the German army, included the
Center-Northern part of Italy in the beginning.

As the Allied armies advanced, the territory was
restricted to the northern regions situated near
the Alpine Chain and to a part of Emilia and Tuscany.

The period from September 23, 1943, to April 25, 1945,
corresponding to that of the Republican Government,
is represented by the use of the "imperial" set values
overprinted "G.N.R." (Republican National Guard)
locally and with "provisional" characteristics.

Issues of the "Republican National Guard" with a
typographic overprint "G.N.R." in red or black were
released between December 20, 1943 and
February 1944. They were overprinted on the
"imperial" set stamps of 1929-42 (20 values);
on Kingdom airmail stamps (2 values);
on Kingdom express stamps (2 values);
on war propaganda stamps of the Kingdom (12 values);
and on Kingdom postage-due stamps (13 values).

The first issue was produced by Bontacchino Typography
in Brescia, the following by the Chiamenti Typography
in Verona.

P.M. (overprint on stamps of Italy): Italy, military stamps
(1943-5 [Posta Militaire (military post)].

Thanks Blair,
within my electronic stamp album, I allocate a file for
every stamp overprint I have.
Hence a simple "Agent ransack" search on PM or GNR would have
the stamps in nano seconds.
A non match indicates I have never had these overprints before.
