Default stamp imaging trend ...

the old tome catalogs of past, featured b/w images ... the importance
being design, a.k.a. dies or design templates ... respecting security
printing methods of old ( fugitive dyes, chalk-coated papers and
chemical base of the papers used ... acid to alkaline ...) the current
imaging trend may or may not be picturing the true colour of older
issues ... at least in used state

colour separations are best achieved by lot scanning varieties with
your own device, and then making a separation based on specialised
variety listings ... colour descriptions also vary with catalog
reference globally ...

without unused reference copies ... properly stored ... variances occur

even high level auction house imaging, can fail to depict the true
colour ...

Default stamp imaging trend ...

Hi
When I was working on a catalogue of worldwide trading stamps I had six
or seven different color/colour guides and none of them agreed. I ended up
using an old Hy-Grade color guide that I think was from H. E. Harris in the
1940s or 50s and best guess. Since many were printed on colored paper and
compared under artificial light other people may not agree with my colors.
I've had poor results with color copiers at office supply stores. My $99
scanner and $99 ink jet seem to do a better job. I'm using my own set-up
when I need a color copy in an exhibit.
In a few years when I finish the work on the US Rev-Perfins Catalogue
maybe the price of a laser two-sided color printed will be down so I can
compare it with ink-jet printers. I would like to redo the trading stamp
catalog in color as well as a catalog of US trade union dues and assessment
stamps and a catalog of worldwide QSL Bureau stamps. As my doctor said the
other day, all these activities keeps you going at 78.
Art, Cinderellas are for fun

a study of GB QVR-GVR reigns was made over the years by a friend in DK
.... he remarks that safe referal point is unused copy ... remarking
also the failure of printers to match reality correctly ...
water-immersed copies are wildly off-shade ...

he developed grading tables for all issues ... gem to junk ... amazing
! from a century of auction house listings and catalogs ... SG as
reference point ...

I gave up studying GVR issues ... eyestrain regardless of shade,
sometimes the indicia carries the collector value ... or market variable
