Fun With Cancellations - Post 1
Howdy do - I figured I'd toss up a few decent cancels to talk about and maybe get some discussion going. I know Rodney has got us enthralled about "Down Under" for quite some time now, so I thought I'd even the score and bring up some things that are cool to me. While sorting out a huge bunch of British Commonwealth, I came across a few decent cancels. Elephant from Southern Rhodesia: http://www.adirondack-pc.com/graphics/elephant.jpg Lion from South Africa: http://www.adirondack-pc.com/graphics/empire.jpg Apparently, this was a common item representing the Empire Exhibition down there. Another one, which I forgot to scan, was: "Prevent Veld(t) Fires" Which, of course, reminds me of Prevent Forest Fires and Smokey the Bear of US fame. Smokey is still used to this day in many places, like up in Ray Brook, NY - outside the NY Department of Conservation buildings. Also displayed, of course, are the fire conditions. Since I'm not a true cover / entire collector, I find these when sorting out large bunches of stamps and since they're pretty much S.O.N., I thought I'd share them. They, amongst others, will stay in my collection. Anyone have any they want to share from their collections? ======================= Tracy Barber ----------------------- adirondack-pc ----------------------- "Freebie Stamp Project" ======================= |

No doubt, most areas of the planet have their specialists,
as far as the west coast of Australia is concerned, we are spoilt rotten, all kudos to the "West Australian Study Group" who produce booklets like these, of which I offer some scans. It makes a mockery of those who try and dictate to us, what we should or should not collect. Armed with this booklet and a reasonably clear part-cancel, one can sometimes decipher just which post office was used. http://cjoint.com/data/frcW0bDHVv.htm http://cjoint.com/data/frcYO62Wk7.htm http://cjoint.com/data/frc0XVJc6y.htm | Howdy do - | | I figured I'd toss up a few decent cancels to talk about and maybe get | some discussion going. Pretty good one. I have several others around, but not handy. No doubt they're buried with some other stuff, but do recall some cute ones, like the ones we just posted. ======================= Tracy Barber ----------------------- adirondack-pc ----------------------- "Freebie Stamp Project" ======================= |

I've seen a nice one in an old stamp magazine: the (GDR)
stamp depicts a swimmer, the slogan of the cancel says "Haltet das Wasser rein" ("Keep the water clean"). Looked almost like one of these warning boards they put alongside the swimming pools. Jan-Martin |
