Multicolour and look like ... stamps ;-)
Well, they don't appeal to me.
May seem strange but the pre-1989 notes looked more like real money.
And no, I am not a communist ;-)

I particularly like the reverse of the 1 ban coin.

Good question g. The notes are neat, but the coins look like tokens or
test coins. Quite dull. As if the central bank wanted to emphasize that
it prefers paper money over metallic rounds ...

Well, I don't like them either...
As I said before, they look like ... stamps !
I prefer less colourful designs, more serious, like the US dollar for
instance or even like the euro (which is more colourful that the US dollar
but still with one colour per note...).
Matter of opinions I suppose...

test coins.

Exactly.

Or like not bothering to find new designs and spend on production of
"difficult" coins, hoping that soon they will be replaced by the ... euros
;-)

A nice weekend to everybody !

Ha! Even several of the countries that joined the EU in May 2004 will
probably not introduce the euro before 2010 or so, maybe even later.
Romania will most probably join the EU in two years, again with the euro
coming "a little" later. So they could have spent some more time on
designing those coins ;-)

Somewhat but not entirely OT: The accession treaties with both Romania
and Bulgaria will be signed on Monday - and BG issues an "EU-Bulgaria"
commem on that day. That coin (silver, partly gold plated) has a face
value of 1.95583 leva which happens to be exactly 1 euro. Nice idea.

Yeah, but they believe that adherence in EU = adherence to EMU also :-)
They are also mentioning in that site the idea behind the new coins: they
say they have
the same dimensions and are made of the same metals like the euro!!!

And something totally OT :-)
Did you know that today all the transactions (private) are made in ... euros
in Romania ?...
People talk only in euros, they express everything in euros !

Well, that is true in the sense that new member states do not have the
possibility to "opt out" like Denmark and the UK did. (Sweden is a
somewhat different story.) But it will still take a while ...

Today, only a few hours ago, the accession treaties were signed, and
Romania will become an EU member in January 2007 (same schedule as
Bulgaria). According to the current rules, they could then join Euroland
in 2009 at the earliest.

They are also mentioning in that site the idea behind the new coins: they
say they have the same dimensions and are made of the same metals like the
euro!!!

First I thought you were kidding ... but you're right, they do say so in
the Romanian language version only. Boo, not fair ;-) Actually the
"dimensions" part seems to apply to the new notes; as for the coins,
well, do you know what "Aceeas¸i compozit¸ie ca monedele euro" means?
The sizes and colors do not quite match those of the euro and cent
coins, I think ...
