The Coin in question is the same as a "Large Indian Princess Head - Type III" Gold Dollar With two slight differences Obverse: (NB) * means Star Instead of reading "United States of America", this coin reads " United * * * * * * * States * * * * * * Reverse: Instead of reading " 1 Dollar " and the the Date, this coin reads " July 1868 " My Question: Is it a Gold Dollar issued in the same way of Irish 1690 Gun Money ? Is it a Campaign Token from U.S Grant presidential campaign? Any insight would be appreicated Thanks in advance Peter Not a U.S. Mint issue, but a charm similar to the small California gold coins of the period. It is also listed as a game counter by Rulau and Fuld, 1972. They list four varieties: One-29 (R-4); One-30, same but smaller letters, JULY small and near top, 1868 near bottom ((R-6); One-31, ornament at bottom has loop, different border (R-6); and One-32, only 12 stars (no inscription?) (R-7). Their rarity ratings are as follows: R-4, 200-499 known, R-6, 20-74 known; and R-7, 10-19 known. Of course these ratings are as of 1972, so absolute precision should not be expected. All these counters are made of brass, perhaps gilt. Unfortunately they offer no explanation for the July 1968 inscription. Perhaps these were made to sell as souvenirs of a state fair. |
