Help with "INDIA"
I would appreciate information about collecting the postage stamps
issued by the Republic of India. As a long-time collector of worldwide stamps, it is impossible to "complete" the entire World, so from time to time my efforts are focused on specific areas. Several years ago, UNESCO data indicated that the Peoples Republic of China is the most populous by far, with India a distant second. My attention became focused on PRC, so now i have pretty good coverage of Chinese stamps, including the fraction in "Taiwan", but not much from India. As second most populous, India certainly deserves good coverage in any representative Collection of worldwide stamps. Local collectors in Minnesota don't seem to have any interest in something as "common" as postally-used stamps from India, and the stamp Dealers shun them as garbage, nothing valuable, not worth having in their Shop, because they will never "make any big money" selling India or Pakistan. Too common, too many, and no demand. For several years, i have participated in various international Exchanges such as Potomac, British-Europa, Sierra, but rarely any items from actual Collectors in India. Perhaps a problem with the heat and humidity? On-paper mixtures from India are almost impossible to soak, because of glue or paste. Seems as though instead of "licking" (unsanitary) any stamps, they make a flour-paste, and smear that on the backside of each stamp before affixing the stamp? Perhaps Elmers Glue if available. And yet, I can't even find those :"cheap, too common" stamps other than the zillions of Mahatma Ghandi! Suggestions, anyone? S. |

Alan, Sir:
Thanks for the link. It will take me awhile to absorb the information available there, but this appears to be about some organization along the lines of our APS, as opposed to our USPS? Is there a stamp-issuing government "India Post" Service where one can purchase year-sets, as can be done in Canada, or USPS "Philatelic Stores" (Kansas City, etc.)? Wow! The legal hassles over exporting"Antiquities" (India Artifacts, coins, stamps, artwork in excess of 100 years old). Maybe i need to re-examine my collection of 19th-Century Commonwealth of India, and Indian States? Gracias! Do we have any mutual friend who can vouch for reliability of both you and me? If you are from down-under, i used to exchange with Tom, a collector in Queensland. Have you traded with anyone in Minnesota? Most hobbyist who collect "worldwide" for fun as i do, will understand my personal preference for individual stamps postally-used which can be quickly and easily hinge-mounted in proper places into "albums" such as Scott International, or home-made. Postal stationery, sheetlets, booklets, and such kinds of bulky gimmicks by Stamp-issuers (often as moneymakers, not even useful as postage) are non-essentials which i will gladly forego. Worldwide gets pretty voluminous just collecting definitives and postally-usable commemoratives without the gimmicks. Beautiful, too, as you can see in the engraved stamps from Austria. However, any type of "Cover" is too bulky when all that i want is the stamp, to be placed among hundreds of other stamps in compact Album.. When it is difficult or impossible to find real postally-used stamps (such as from Papua-New Guinea) it becomes convenient to purchase mint new issues or year-sets, even though that requires the hassle of safely mounting these fragile items amongst the preferred hinge-mounted postally-used items. As the proper used ones are found, the "mint" ones should be removed and replaced, so whatever temporary protective mount is used must NOT damage the album. In the case of recent India, my hope would be to find sources for genuine postally-used stamps, including used commemoratives. But i would be interested to acquire mint year-sets if "used" year-sets are not to be found. Cheers, S. |

Nineteenth century and first half of twentieth are pretty much already mounted in my albums. If the "packets" could be limited to postally-used stamps (no CTO) later than 1950, that would be a big leg up, so i have contacted the source which you suggested. Thanks for steering me to that starting-point! S. +++++++++++++++ For example: Try : http://www.stampsworldindia.com/ He seems to have very good prices on Indian stamps and packets. There are tons of postally used - why the need for CTO? Have you ever seen any? Sounds like the used year sets are what you want.
