This can justify why it arrived later...

Incorrect Franked Date

This matter was also discussed in the February 1991 issue, and elicited a
number of replies from readers. The number of markings available to correct
the date on franked mail seems to be increasing. If you have access to
quantities of commercial mail, these are worth watching out for. As they are
only found on letters with frank stamp impressions they are likely to be
overlooked by the stamp collectors in your office, who are only interested
in pretty adhesives!

Rick Adamson of Queensland has sent me two such items which are worth
sharing. Figure 1 is a nice clear example of the usual situation
encountered. Here a company has franked a letter on May 8, 1990 with the
date set on 7.5.90, probably as a result of forgetting to wind it on from
the previous day. The letter was put into the postal system, the post office
at South Brisbane noticed the mistake, accepted it as a genuine error, and
applied their rubber cds with the correct date adjacent to the franking
machine impression. Examples similar to this are not infrequent, and can
usually be found by sorting through 500-1,000 envelopes in office rubbish
bins! Not so easy is the second type.

Figure 2 is a new marking to me. It is a purpose-designed cds for correcting
franking machine date errors, and is similar in style to that used in a
couple of other Queensland offices. However, this is the first strike I have
seen from Darra. One can only wonder at the number of franking machine
errors of date that must occur, that so many post offices find it necessary
to have a special cds made to deal with them. In this case the user of the
franking machine obviously got a little ahead of himself and turned the date
on a day too far!
