Two famous Australian operatic stars are featured in a fifteen value set
released by Nicaragua in January 1975. They are Dame Nellie Melba and Joan
Sutherland.

The set was designed by L. Klonaris and printed by De La Rue of Colombia in
multicolour. All stamps are horizontal and measure 40 mm x 28 mm.

One of the most beautiful structures to be found in Nicaragua is the concert
hall, the fine arts festival hall, in Managua. It is here where opera is
performed. In connection with its concert hall and the Nicaraguans love of
opera, a 15 value set commemorating the world's greatest opera singers was
released on January 22, 1975.

Mr. William Cox, who is involved in the designs and motifs for Nicaragua's
postage stamps, together with Mr. Harold Rosenthal, editor of "Opera",
corresponded with international critics and opera personalities and
requested a list of the greatest opera singers. A world poll, comprising 48
individual voters (26 from the United Kingdom, 6 from Italy, 8 from USA, 6
from Germany and Austria, and 2 from France) was taken. The results were
correlated by Mr. Rosenthal and they are depicted on the stamps.

At the top of the poll was Caruso, followed by Chaliapin, and Callas. The
design shows the singers in costume in one of their most famous roles
alongside a musical excerpt from that opera.

The issue is being released to coincide with Joan Sutherland's appearance in
"La Traviata" at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

There is an elderly plaque recording the birthplace of Dame Nellie
Melba just around the corner from where I live. It is set into the
wall of a rather seedy furniture emprium. Such is fame.

however, her moniker is forever linked to a decadent dessert, the Peach
Melba, Mmmm
as the Italian Queen does with her Pizza~ The Marguerita.

As for the Men, well we have things like Hand Grenades named after us...The
Mills Bomb.
