The most worthless coin found in circulation.....
I just came back from Costa Rica yesterday and the "Colon" is worth 432 to the
dollar. I found a half colon piece on the ground while waiting for a bus. This is worth about one-900th of a buck....what is the most worthless coin in circulation currently on the planet? Not stuff from before hyper-inflation from before world war 2 or something like that, but currently. I think it's either this or Uzbekistan... eric l. |

There maybe some Turkish coins still circulating that are 1000 lira or something similar that maybe more worthless. I remember when I was in Russia a few years ago when their were 33 rubles to the dollar, anyway I remember it was not unusual to use small coins ie 1, 2, and 3 kopeks in daily transactions for postage stamps etc. Did you find any of the thin variety 500 Colones coins? I saw an article in World Coin News about them supposedly there are about 100 of them and everybody(yeah right) in Costa Rica is looking for them. The lowest value coin I can remember getting in circulation there was a 2 grosz coin which there would have been worth about half a US cent back in 2001. Poland has a 5 Zloty coin worth a bit more of a dollar that is a mainstay coin, proof that coins of greater than a dollar will circulate. Viet-Nam introduced some coins last fall, I remember hearing about them in CoinWorld, but cannot recall what the values of them were, just that they created a problem with kids swallowing them, they were the first coins circulated since the mid 1970's. Poland has a 5 Zloty coin worth a bit more of a dollar that is a mainstay coin, proof that coins of greater than a dollar will circulate. It is the proof that size matters. The US dollar coin will also circulate if it was minted in a smaller size and the paper note not printed anymore. The UK uses one-pound and two-pound coins (worth about $1.80 and $3.60), and their size makes them handy to use. The British learned their lesson. The old penny was as large as the US 50-cent piece, and using a public telephone required the use of four of them. Pretty soon, the coin box became full and people were no longer able to make calls. Furthermore, many were stuck in the chute when the coin box was full and could not be retrieved.
