I had to laugh when one day I was watching the NBC today show and they
referred to the Queen Mother as Elizabeth 1st.

I don't think the concept of Queen Consort has sunk in to the psyche of the
general US population. :-)

I for one don't understand all that royal title stuff.

BTW what is a "lady in waiting" and what are they waiting around for?

(smile face here).

A Lady in Waiting as far as I am aware is the Queens personal attendant(s)
It's considered an honorable title/role as you are basically the closest
person to the queen regarding personal matters. In modern time there is only
one LiW at any given time but as far as I am aware in times gone by (such as
during Elizabeth 1st reign) there were several. In Elizabeth 1st's time they
helped her dress, made up her room and things like that. If you watch the
movie Elizabeth with Cate Blanchet you will see the Ladies in Waiting in
action.

Elizabeth the Second has had more than one Lady in Waiting (which you would
expect after more than 50 years on the throne) and I know that one of her
first LiW was her best friend. In an interview this particular LiW recalled
once when the Queen came to visit her in her small London flat, Her Majesty
commented that she was Jealous of her and her life. A sign that palace life
isn't what we commoners think it must be like.

As far as obscure royal titles, it does get a little confusing especially
when one person has more than one title. As far as consorts are
concerned....a consort is someone married to the monarch but isn't a direct
heir to the throne. The Queen Mother was Queen Consort because she married
the King (then Prince Albert). The interesting thing though is that a man
who marries a Queen is not titled King. That is why the current Queens
husband is still only called Prince Phillip. He is a prince consort. The
same was with Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband.

This might explain it better:

During the reigns of Mary (1689-1694) and Anne (1702-1714) lady in waiting
had more of a meaning, rumour have it, with some foundation that said
monarchs had a preference for ladies and not gentlemen. Multiple accounts
state that many believed both W & M each had partners of the same
persuasion. Anne had a very well documented and quite tempestous
relationship with Sarah Churchill, wife of the Duke of Marlborough.

If one has an eye for ancient coinage, that is a beauty. If it is
authentic and I found 9K under my dining room table, I would consider
it.
