Software for splitting different stamp images
Hi all,
Some time ago, we discussed here of different methods for scanning stamps. Somebody (Rodney, Blair, or ???) mentioned a software able to separate individual images of many stamps previously scanned as a set in one page. This software would generate as many *.jpg files as the number of stamps present on the page. Do you remember this ? Many thanks in advance ! -- All the best, Pierre Courtiade to answer me, please replace NOSPAM by my family name |

Software for splitting different stamp images
Blair doesn't scan stamps Pierre, It is Seiko software part of the Epson scan software One takes a preview of the scanner platen then creates "carousels" around each of the (say 30) stamps then press "go" and the scanner takes 30 individual passes at the resolution of choice. You will need to buy an epson scanner, not sure if there is dedicated software to suit. hope this helps Rod "Pierre COURTIADE" wrote in message ... I believe you are refering to the EZStamp software from Marios Thepdossious which is alluded to in a 2006 discussion. Marios used to intervene quite often on this newsgroup. I'm not sure the process is exactly what you are searching for. The software, for what I understand, will automatically crop and straighten a number of stamps on a page and then will scan them individually. Marios has developped a number of stamp and coin related software one of which competes with our friend Alain's new effort at automatic stamp recognition. Here is the original question from the 2006 thread and Marios' contribution which was the last of 22 in this thread. Links at the bottom to Marios' site. Hi Bill, EzImage was designed just for this purpose. I use it dayly & have scanned hundreds of thousands of stamps. You simply scan the stamps, then go to AutoSeparate. You can also Autorotate & autocrop. You can combine actions into one also. You will need the PRO version of EzImage to do this. You can get a FREE DEMO to try at http://www.ezstamp.com let me know if you have any questions. I am the developer. regards Marios Bill P wrote: I have a need to scan thousands of stamps. I would like to place a few dozen on the scanner at a time, and then have some software automatically ( if possible) separate the individual stamps into separate image files. Does anyone know of the name of such software? will automatically crop and straighten
a number of stamps on a page and then will scan them individually. I'd like to see that! I don't believe that is what it does at all, I think you are confused. If it scans a page, then straightens and crops then you will get differing dpi scans not recomended at all. "Richard Thouin" wrote in message ... Software for splitting different stamp images
Sir F. A. Rien wrote :
Some version of Epson's TWAIN have an 'automatic' recognition of items. It works best when the background is constant and there's a definite 'border [such as a black mount] to mark the individual items. Thanks for the tip Sir F. A. Rien. As explained in my answer to Rodney I will have to wait to check if my Epson software has this other capability. Only problem with such separation in the scanner is that the colorimetry and levels are set for -=each=- image and it's not constant. Well understood Better to scan the lot with a check white/black strip, then separate in your graphics program. More work = better quality. Now I have some difficulty to understand this : would you place a B&W strip in the middle of the stamps, scan the page and modify some parameters (which ones ?) to get a better picture ? Or : just placing this B&W strip in the middle of the stamps would force the scanner to automatically select the optimum settings ? Could you also elaborate a little bit on what is exactly this B&W strip ? Thanks again, Pierre |

I have an old Epson scanner able to scan negative film strips and positive transparencies (slides ?) which I use quite rarely. It is not compatible with my new Windows 7 computer, so I have to use it with an old Windows XP computer. I will see if the software of this Epson scanner includes this Seiko part. hope this helps Yes : it certainly helps ! Thanks again Rodney. -- All the best, Pierre |

Pierre, The link that you are asking for is mentioned on my older page: http://www.artonstamps.org/Magazine/...can-stamps.htm Unfortunately, it doesn't work anymore. Im my article I share my experience of cropping and straightening of scanned images by using Photoshop. Eventually make a search with Google by using -- batch crop AND straighten -- or similar keywords. Thanks Victor : I recall now your article. I have read it again with a great interest. As I have Photoshop as well I'll be able to test your advices. Thanks as well for the tips on choosing the right words in a Google search : this ic the most demanding task in any search, especially when it is not in your own language. -- All the best, Pierre |

Bonjour Richard, Very nice to speak to you, now from across the Atlantic after we were able to meet each other "live" in june in Paris ! Yes I had in mind Mario's software : it was very useful to remind me all the details and the different links. I thought there was also a free sofware, but i may be wrong. I am going to read all that again carefully. Mon meilleur souvenir ! -- Cordialement, Pierre |
