Calling your student an idiot, isn't that something teachers can be
disciplined for?

Why don't you re-read my original post, Edwin? I didn't call him an idiot.

True, but something equally intentionally derogatory. While an idiot
signifies someone with an IQ well under 70, a jerk signifies someone who ...
(nevermind)

I know that this is difficult for you to comprehend, but I don't care
if the kid wants a 1913 V-nickel or not. I posted the excerpt from his
assignment because it concerned numismatics and because I knew that
many of the readers would find it amusing, as I did.

Not difficult to understand at all.
Hmm...perhaps it your "What a jerk!" comment that threw me off.
Sorry, I didn't realize that's how you express amusement.

But what I'm finding even more amusing are your responses!

Thank you! They were, of course, meant to be and were easily
recognized as such. Hmm...perhaps there's a lesson in here somewhere.
No, probably not.

So please give us more. Perhaps you could make a case that since I
teach Money and Banking that I must have an innate hatred of
socialism, with sexual undertones.

Why?

You could also post under a third
or fourth name to make it look like you are actually several people.

I could...but why?

Hey, what happened to a second name? Why wouldn't I use that one
before the other two? You're making this whole thing very confusing.

Not sure why you brought all this new stuff up in our thread. It must
be very important to you.

But, we're discussing one thing and I certainly have no desire to
expand our posts to cover your other...umm...debates. If you're angry
at others, fine. But, perhaps your energy would be best directed at
those who are making you so angry that you feel you need to drag that
stuff into our discussion.

Unless you're just venting, of course. Nothing like spreading the
acrimony around to bolster your case!

Sorry,my British friend, but that all sounds pretty messed up.
pounds?crowns?shillings?pence?

That was in the good old days prior to 1971 - it's all very boring
now. We have pounds and we have pence, and 100 pence is one pound
zzzz...
Here in the U.S.,everything is based on the decimal system, which
seems to keep it fairly simple,at least to us.

Not everything surely? You still have feet and inches right? Or is it
10 inches to the US foot

$1= 1-1 dollar federal reserve note,SBA or Sacagawea dollar
coin or
100 cents (1 cent coins) or
2 halves (50 cent coins) or
4 quarters (25 cent coins) or
10 dimes (10 cent coins) or
20 nickels (5 cent coins)

Ok... I can work out all these names except dimes (no doubt this gets
asked a zillion times...)

Maybe an explanation of your monetary system would help me
understand?I'm not very familiar with your coinage system.

Like I said we have pounds and pence. A pound is worth more that a
dollar and a penny or more than a cent (we don't call our pennies
cents, that'd be confusing)

In the old days we have farthings, guineas, groats, crowns, florins
and all sorts of other interesting stuff!

Of course our countries that endured the LSD (Pounds, shillings,
pence) decimalisation before 1971 and changed to dollars. Two I can
think of being Australia and New Zealand. Seems that didn't think the
LSD system quite as quaint as the UK.

Well, at the risk of sounding like a bad teacher for making fun of
someone, here goes...

I teach 11th grade English, for those who don't know. I usually have a
few college prep classes, and the mistake in question occurred in one of
these. I was reading student compositions at my desk while they read
(somewhat) silently. I can usually puzzle out what someone means when
they spell something wrong, but in this case, I was kind of at a loss. I
called the student to my desk. "Joe, (not his real name) can you tell me
what this word is, because I'm really not sure what you are trying to
say."

He looked at me like I was an idiot. There is no shaking the confidence
of the 17-year-old boy that anyone over 25 is mildly retarded.
"Calendar," he said.

"Oh. Like the thing you look at to see what the date is?"

"Yeah..." like I had totally taken leave of my sanity.

"Thank you, Joe, that's waht I thought you meant, but wanted to make
sure," I replied.

Without asking for further explanation, he returned to his seat.

At least it was phonetic: cow lender.

OOOOOOOOH!!!!! Chrysta expropriated her student's intellectual property.

So who is making me so angry, John? I wasn't aware that that was the case.

What is somewhat confusing IMO is that nowhere (well, not on any
contemporary US coin) you will see the face value in digits. But then
again they are made by and for people who use those pieces every day,
not for visitors g.

Chrysta asked"
Is it just me, or has anyone else come to recognize Joe as a "tell-it-
like-it-is-voice-of-reason?" I've kind of missed that since Bigg Fredd
left.
I'm just saying.
=================================

I wasn't sure what to make of the guy until that post he made that you
quoted. Now I know I really like him. :-)

And I think Bigg Fredd still posts occassionally.
