Wow! Someone REALLY wants that quarter, don't they? I had no idea that such
a coin commanded such a price!

I know that some clad quarters are REALLY difficult to find nice. nobody saved
them, few rolls were put back, most all of the nice specimens come from mint
sets.

Maybe the 83-D is one of the ones where even the mint sets looked ugly. I got a
couple of mint sets like that, where the quarter and the dime are just plain
crappy.

I think the biggest thing working for this slab is that no Mint Sets
were issued that year. ;-) I'm just a little surprised that 20 years on,
it's been decided that an MS-65 is worth more than 168x face....

If there were no mint sets that year, that coin might well be a bargain. Try to
find one nicer!

pcgs.com is listing that coin at $10.00. The auction currently sits at
$56.83! Maybe it's a bargain - maybe not.

You guys can have it.

there are a number of coins priced at PCGS.COM that I consider woefully
underpriced. The market thinks so, too.

Does this coin deserve to be one of the underpriced? Dunno. Only way to tell is
to try to find a nicer one.

Bruce....there were no Mint Sets in 1982 or 1983. Souvenir sets from those
years usually do pretty well on eBay.

I don't follow Washington's much, how does the quality of the
souvenir sets compare to standard mint sets?

Since I've never seen one I can't comment. But I'm sure the perception is that
the coins in these sets are of better quality than what you generally might
find in original Mint bags and rolls.

When I was putting together my various sets I obtained all of my coins from
Mint and Proof sets with the exception of the years in which there were none.
The majority of those I cherry-picked from a local dealer's stock but was never
really satisfied with the quality.

I handled the business strike Kennedy halves from 1965-1967 a bit differently.
I managed to pick up a sweet 1965 on eBay from a guy running a Dutch auction
for coins from an original Mint roll. However, I "cheated" when it came to the
1966 and 1967 "business strike" specimens in my set....they were actually from
Special Mint Sets. They didn't look out of place since the 1965 was soooo nice
and because my three SMS labelled specimens were all Cameos cherry-picked from
eBay auctions.

Scanning auctions for Special Mint Sets with cameo halves was a fun endeavor
that took a sharp eye....and a well placed snipe hoping that nobody else
noticed the Cameo half. I was really only interested in obtaining the three
necessary for my own collection, but couldn't resist bidding on a duplicate set
that I "discovered". I got that set for $12.50 and cracked out the half and put
it up on eBay. If my memory serves me it sold for $47 ;-)
