The Da Vinci Code

ROYSTON Cave may hold the key in the search for the Holy Grail, the
famous quest for Christ's chalice dating back to Biblical times.

Grail hunters are set to flock to the historic site following the
publication of best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown.

The book has fuelled enormous interest in the grail, believed to have
been used by Christ at the Last Supper and by Joseph of Arimathea to
collect Christ's blood on the cross.

On the trail are places where ancient fellowship of warriors the
Knights Templar held sway — and Royston Cave is just one of the places
in Hertfordshire which is steeped in Templar lore.

Unexcavated parts of the popular attraction may hold clues to the
mystery and some people think there is a distinct possibility the
ancient relic is hidden in one of the unexplored caverns.

Also, the garbage in the book about an anagram or a hidden
meaning in the name "Mona Lisa" is belied by the fact that,
prior to Vasari writing his "History of the Artists" 31
years after the death of da Vinci, the painting was simply
known as "A Certain Florentine Lady". It was Vasari who
said that the woman was "Mona Lisa del Giocondo", thus
giving it the names by which it is now known.

I'm not sure which I find funnier: That some people will swallow whole a
bunch of stuff a guy made up in order to create a suspenseful novel. Or
that some other people will claim without any apparent irony that they have
"debunked" a work of fiction.

What next? There's no such thing as hobbits? Well, knock me over with a
feather!

An interesting exercise, no doubt, even though you are debunking a
work of fiction.

The Da Vinci Code is not, of course, a reliable research text. It is,
however, an effective vehicle for intriducing some of these topics to
the general public.

The point is that fiction shouldn't be based on palpable falsehoods.
Leonardo was a real person and the Mona Lisa is a real painting.
Any competent writer should be able to construct a fiction around
Leonardo and the Painting without repeating falsehoods. That's
what "imaginative fiction" is all about.

So either the author is an unimaginative dullard who needs to
deliberately distort established facts, because he's unable to
conceive of novel scenarios. Or he's too ignorant to know any
better.

Whichever is the case it's clear the public don't know any better
themselves and are lapping this up, and this guy is going to make
a mint.

Ignorance once more, prevails in other words. When in this case
it needn't have done. That's the point.

Agreed. An example of respect for history in writing
fiction is John Dunning's recent book "The Bookman's
Promise". Dunning did some real research about Richard
Francis Burton and passes it on to the reader. Then he
constructs a "what might have been" story about a three
month period in burton's life for which there is no account.
But he does not have to distort what is known to have
happened in order to make the plot work. Nor does he make
any claims that this actually happened or even that it has
any reality outside of the story line.

This doesn't seem to leave any room for artistic license. There are good
books as well as bad that feature a more or less seamless blending of
history and imagination. I don't feel we can generalize on the basis of
this one book.
