Default selling common stamps

Hi all.
First, some history. I am a newbie wading my way through Scott's Catalogs
for a friend. He has a shoebox full of various worldwide stamps he handed
me and asked me to look through them to see if anything is worthwhile in
there to sell, and scrap the rest.

Now, I collect coins largely, but my son nor I know too much of
stamps, though we both have a passing interest in them. I'm guessing any
cancelled stamps listed in Scott's as .20 value means a dealer would not
even be interested. Thus, these are 'scrap' by my friend's terms and open
to giving to my son, myself, or others.

I'm also guessing that a stamp worth 10.00 in Scott's would at least be of
an interest to a dealer, and he would give me a fair offer based on
condition, wholesale pricing, etc., which would be a small percentage of
the Scott's value.

I want to be fair to myself and to my friend, and don't want to waste
dealers' time bringing him things to look at that he wouldn't be
interested in.

This brings us to two questions.

1) At what point of Scott's value should I figure on the stamp actually
being worth selling in my friends interest?

2) Assuming a stamp is say a cancelled VF that Scott's shows as a value
of 10.00, what should I expect a dealer to offer? Is 20% of Scott's
realistic, should it be a lot more, a lot less? I understand condition is
everything, but there must be some guesstimate of percentage I could go
with for a 'typical' example. I am interested only in the 100.00 and
under range, as there isn't likely to be anything of any real value.

Scott catalog prices usually are far from realastic. You are pretty
much in the ballpark with your figures. Right on target as to
condition. What you get for the stamps would have to be determined by
the dealer...or someone else interested in them. Most dealers have
little use for common stamps and will not make an offer.
