If you ran the mint, and could choose any US coin design from history

choose? My choices:

Cent: Indian Head
Nickel: Buffalo
Dime: "Mercury"
Quarter:
Half: Walking Liberty
Dollar:
5 dollar: Incuse indian (proper name?)
10 dollar:
20 dollar: St. Gaudens

What would your dream lineup consist of?

I would go along with yours, but filling in the blanks ...
Quarter: Standing Liberty
Dollar: Peace
I know, for some reason the Peace dollar isn't considered by many to
be a nice as the Morgan. But, I like it ... even as a young kid it
was one of my favorite coins. Gotta admit, I like the Frankloin Half
too.

Given that it is restricted to coins minted in the past, I just wouldn't
change a darn thing!
When the best Art a country can come up with for its circulating coins are
recycled designs from the past;
I have to say that is a pretty sorry commentary on that country.

If it was a design representing what the world sees, it would probably be a
image of some fat cat over weight
corporate Boss Hogg type mucky muck scarfing down a burger from Mickey D's.

If it was what it represents to the public, I think a design on the front
with only an inscription saying,
"good for paying taxes" and the only design on the reverse would be, "Gov
will redistribute without rhyme or reason"
is suitable.

If I had the power, I would hold a country wide contest by professional
artists for designs depicting
ideals or concepts of what the US should represent and not what it does
actually represent.
NO real historical personages allowed as a MAIN device!

I would choose a panel of judges with no consideration given to who should
politically be on it but who was best qualified
to judge by talent and credentials and experience. I would maintain a veto
for designs "I" don't like and a free pass for designs "I" do like :-)
I would be final judge.

I would then not let the mint's egos allow much (if any) alteration on those
designs.
I bet we could come up with some pretty spectacular images to rival or
surpass the past.

With respect to Anita's fine farmyard choices (indeed many old bank
notes had agricultural themes, so she's not far off the mark), I would
choose from historical designs:

Every coin issued by Ireland since 1928 has featured a bird an animal or a
fish. Billy

Penny: I like the flying eagle design, but I think it's too small for
the penny. So, I'd put the Indian on the front and the 2c shield on
the back.

Nickel: shield nickel obverse, buffalo reverse

Dime: the 3c star/shield obverse, 1946 reverse

Quarter: 1804 or 1815 obverse 1916 reverse

Half: 1794 obverse, flying eagle penny design for reverse
Alt. half: 1934 Ark. reverse for the obverse, 1916 regular reverse
Alt. half: 1934 Tex. commemorative without all the Texas specifics

Dollar: 1915 $50 front & back

None of them would have "In God We Trust" or "E Pluribus Unum". Not
that I don't like or appreciate these mottoes, but they clutter small
spaces. Ideally, all other wording would be small in order to maximise
the beauty of the designs. Put "United States of America" on the rim;
and keep the other elements small and along the edge (no words in the
field).

Except the 1966 10 shillings featuring Padraic Pearse, the 1988 50p
featuring a crest, and the 2000 punt featuring a stylized ship.

I wouldn't go backwards but forwards and hire two or three artists to
submit their visions of liberty. 21st century coins for the 21st
century!

There's a bird on the back of the ten bob, a small one but a bird none the
less.

There may be a bird nesting in one of the castles. :-)

I don't have an image of the punt but there must be a seagull in the
background. :-) Billy

There's a bird on the front of all your coins too, isn't there?

Note: London cops don't take kindly to speculation of what the big "ER"
on their hats means. Especially when you start rhyming with "Regina".
Don't ask me how I know that.

I sit corrected.

You remain seated, corrected. 8)

Even a 500x microscope reveals no seagull.
