Hi Browsing through my german stamps, i stumbled on an odd looking 30pf Germania stamp. It seems that the inscription "Deutsches Reich", the center area and the two values "30" "30" are placed lower in the design than on the other 20 or so copies I have. Also the letters seem thicker? Take a look at this scan (the right stamp): http://home19.inet.tele.dk/rkj/germania.jpg My Michel Spezial 2001 does not mention anything about this? It looks like it was printed the same way as the twocolored stamps of the same series.?? Anyone have an explanation? -- Rene I recently read an article about this in the German Postal Specialist, although I don't recall the specific stamp that was discussed, except that it was a Germania. As you suggest, this stamp, and perhaps other Germanias, was printed from two plates because it was initially intended to be in two colors. Normally the registration was so precise that differences are not noticeable, but there is a recognized variety in which the cross extends higher than normal. I don't recall that the article mentioned the letters; perhaps the thickness of the letters depends on the degree of inking of the printing plate? In the Canadian Admirals of the same period, there are differences in the value tablets due to inking, I believe. Bob |

"Jay T. Carrigan" wrote in message news:4eIUa.154786$N7.20116@sccrnsc03... See Michel 144I at the bottom of page 353. Thanks. I had not been thorough enough when i looked in Michel. They are mentioned way below the listing of the ordinary stamps. It seems all one-color stamps of previous twocolor values (30,40,50,75 and 80pf), have been printed with both one-color (plate II) and twocolor plates (plate I). The two-color plates being much scarcer than the one-color plates. -- Rene |
