I'm beginning to think that this is not listed in Scott.

It's a revenue stamp, not postage.

Hi Ben,

I can confirm the answers (from Paul and Sir F. A. Rien)
that this is a French Revenue stamp.

Listed as n° 6 of the "Qittances" stamps category by Yvert & Tellier in
their Revenue Catalogue.
Minimal value of .2 Euro
Issued in 1881

Here is a more detailed answer (in French) that I wrote last night on
news:fr.rec.philatelie
answering the same question from Blair.

==========================================
................
de reçu - a special kind of receipt) n° 6

Neuf cote 2 Euros
Oblitéré (comme le vôtre) 0,2 Euro
Timbre émis en 1881 dentelé 13 1/2 (le même non-dentelé, émis en 1880
cote 200 Euros neuf).
Couleur : gris

Variétés de couleurs :
N° 6 a gris-jaunâtre 0,20 E oblitéré

Hi Ben:

Be VERY careful when looking at this stamp.
It shows the head of Medusa from an old coin
of Syracuse (Sicily).

Part of collecting stamps is (or should be) understanding the symbolism

used
in the design.
Wikkipaedia "Medusa"

Indeed,
I knew Medusa, but a re-read lead me to the realisation
the Australian monotreme, the Echidna is named after one of the
sisters.
Well I never!
