Clean them any way you like as they are worth face value only. Billy

Because I'm assembling collections of ALL circulating coins, including
the quarters, I too wondered how to treat these circulated, but fairly new coins so that they would be in optimal shape to last out the years inside my new Dansco albums. I didn't want as yet unseen contaminants like boogers, spit, skin oil or candy bar stickies to slowly react with and ruin the surfaces. I asked the same question on another forum (not this one), and Dr. Coin or something like that gave me this response: Cautiously wash coins in warm soapy (dishsoap) water in a sink lined with toweling. Do not let coins touch one another. Use only fingers on the coins. Rinse well. Rinse again. Then again. Lay cleaned coins on a cotton towel. Take each coin one at a time and dip it in distilled water. Just swish, don't use fingers. After this point, handle coins only by the edges. Distilled water removes the last vestige of soap and the minerals in regular tap water. Lay coins on fresh dry cotton towel and blot with another towel. When dry (handling only by edges) place in final repository. If it's a Dansco, maybe someone else can tell us all how to get the coins in without demolishing the *&%*!* album! You'll be glad you did. They just look nicer and they won't turn an unnatural color like a cleaned coin might. They're so cheap--you can buy mint bags by the truckloads if you wanted. ;-) |
