Default Automated scanning with a photo scanner

Mostly cross-posted from StampWants forums:

Has anyone explored automated stock-card scanning using a photo scanner
with an auto-feed?

I'm just beginning to explore this, but it looks like the Hewlett-Packard
C5280, C6180, and D7160 have "4x6 auto feed trays" for batch scanning of
photographs. If a photo, why not a G&K stock card with a stamp in it? I
prefer 106BKs (as Rodney can attest): they're 5 1/2" x 3 3/8", which is
close enough that they would probably be natively-supported by the
scanner (see http://www.subwaystamp.com/prodinfo....ber=ZGK106CK/O)

We'd have to make sure that they wouldn't be too thick, gum up the works,
destroy our precious stamps, but it could be a massive time-saver.

Once the images are scanned, the files created, and the images numbered,
they could all be cropped (or whatever) in bulk using third-party
software. It would make posting inventory much easier!

I'm wondering if anyone has walked down this road before, and if they
have any scouting notes.

Keep us informed on any progress.
Personally, I think one has to front up at a specialist store
for on the spot advice.
I am looking for a reliable "duplex" scanner, with auto feed
that will do both sides of my veteran stamp magazines.
(that will scan 4 pages at one pass)
I have been too lazy to haul my butt down to Harvey Normans etc.

I'd certainly test a swag of your stock cards before purchase.
You can get I believe, accompanying software for "auto deskew"
of your documents/cards, and even some that may scan for
redable text.
I think your wallet's health may also have something to do with it

I believe one of our members, Rein
recently bought a new scanner.
We are awaiting the road test from that one (hint)

Joshua, Rodney--there has been an HP C5280 sitting on my desk for about a
month now. There is no obvious way to stack stockcards or anything else
into a tray and have them reach the scanning bed. Nor does "Help" have
anything about auto-load scanning. That doesn't mean it can't be done with
a C5280, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do it. Perhaps it
requires an attachment to do so.

Hi there, Stan.
I think that is one of those "all in one models"
If it is, I wouldn't hold out much hope for anything worthwhile from it.
I am biased against HP, not for any deep understanding
of their product, we attend auctions every second Tuesday
for computer / printers / scanners, and HP are a very common
model auctioned, esp the "all in one", businesses seem to be ditching them.
I still buy brand new in the box inkjets for $5

I still wait in hope for a decent business oriented scanner to auction,
but the chances are slim, I think for anything decent, that is going to last
a very decent outlay is going to be required.
We had a very large plotter at auction a few weeks ago, worth probably
$8,000
knocked down for $1,200, so we live in hope.

Joshua,
you may wish to compare machines from this Aussie link,
http://www.proscan.com.au/Scanner_comparisons.htm

It is PDF, and gives a wide range of choices.
If you see a scanner that may suit,
go to the bottom of the column, and click on the
scanner details link, which will give you
the guts on the model, the lamp life, what size of paper,
if it scans cards and plastic shrunk ID's etc.

It may give you some pointers about which to ask,
before heading to the shop.
(That's if the prices don't scare you off)
