PING: Reid. Counterfeit St G's
Greetings!
A few days ago I said I thought I could likely assemble a date/mintmark set of St G $20's, all counterfeit based on what I'd seen. I'm going to have to back off on that, but here's a date by date breakdown. !907 HR - First seen in 1976, by far the most common St counterfeit and the only one I've seen more than two examples of. !908 - One seen in 1979, I did not note if my example had the motto or not. Plated base metal. 1909/8 - Altered date. seen at 1995 ANA convention. 1910 - two seen one in 1976, one in 1980, both described to me as "Lebanese counterfeits". Good gold, die struck. 1911 - None seen 1912 - One seen in 1976, reverse appears identical to the 1910 and 1913 I list. 1913 - One seen in 1976. 1914 - None seen 1915 - None seen 1916 - none seen. 1920S - two seen, both in 1993, both added mintmark. 1921 - One seen in 1981, altered date 1927. 1922 - One seen in 1976, same reverse as the 1910. 1923 - One seen in 1976, same reverse as the 1910. 1924S - One seen 1996, added mintmark. My notes say "VERY poorly done'. 1924D - One seen 1998, added mintmark. 1925d - One seen 1988, added mintmark. 1926S - Two seen, one in 1986, one in 1995, added mintmark. 1927S - One seen in 1976, added mintmark. 1927d - One seen in 1976, added mintmark. 1928 - None seen 1929 - One seen in 1976, altered from 1928. 1930S - None seen 1931 - One seen in 1988, altered date from 1921(?) 1932 - One seen in 1993, altered date 1922. 1933 - Two seen, in 1981 and 1988....and one of them just might have been good! Other certainly altered date 1923. Bruce |

All talk, all bluff, no action, no nuthin'. Seriously, this is an impressive list. !907 HR - First seen in 1976, by far the most common St counterfeit and the only one I've seen more than two examples of. I've seen one of these in person and a good number of pics. The HR Saint fake I saw in person though wasn't an Omega fake, though the seller tried to pawn it off as an Omega fake. A counterfeit of a counterfeit! This was at one of the Baltimore shows, a seller whose favorite grading company is SEGS and who calls himself a market maker with high-end coins (to justify his pricing). It was somewhat interesting to see that half of the coins on your list you saw in 1980 or earlier. Well over half were altered authentic coins rather than outright counterfeits, though I suppose adding mintmarks and changing dates like this is a form of counterfeiting. I just haven't seen much in the way of counterfeit St G's since then, other than the 1907 HR. I think certification is driving them out of the market, which would be a good thing. Bruce |
