Default Sweden euro vote means trouble for Tony Blair

The UK is supposed to vote on the euro at some time but Blair keeps putting it
off. The recent defeat of the euro in Sweden is going to make it more difficult
for him to pass it in the UK. Even without the Swedish vote it was not looking
good.

The British could simply do what the Swedish did - have a referendum,
get a "No" majority (which would be even more obvious in the UK than it
was in Sweden), and then stay out for ten years. After all, a decision
to not join the currency union is not necessarily permanent. In, say,
2013-15 they can have another euro vote ...

Shortly before the Swedish referendum I read that in Denmark there is,
according to opinion polls, a fairly stable pro-euro majority at
present. That may have changed now, don't know.

As from May 1 there will, for a while, be fewer euro countries than
non-euro countries in the European Union anyway g.

Who cares about Britain, Sweden, or Denmark as long as the Vatican stays in the
EU. Those proof sets have put lots of coin collectors in the black!

Note that, as from Jan-2004, the Vatican can issue more coins than it
currently does :-)

According to the suggestions of the European Commission and the ECB
(pending Council approval), the country may then issue euro coins worth
¤1,000,000 (instead of currently ¤670,000) per year. Also, the extra
contingents for special occasions (Holy Year, Ecumenic Council, and
"Sede Vacante" coins) will be raised from ¤201,000 to ¤300,000.

The Council's approval should not be a problem. After all, the agreement
does not change the overall number of coins allocated to Italy ...

After seeing the Pontiff on the television the other day I think we will be
seeing "Sede Vacante" coins in the not too very distant future.

He looks in terrible condition. I would be surprised if he is gone before the
end of this year.
