Default bexley (private reserve) black

I've been messing around with a lot of different black inks, and I
have noticed that this ink burns my hands. Within seconds of getting
even a drop of the stuff on my hands the spot starts to burn like an
acid (or maybe a strong base) had been spilt there. It doesn't itch,
just burns.

I would be very leery of leaving this stuff, undiluted, in a pen for
long.

how strange. my understanding is that Bexley is largely just rebottled
Private Reserve and PR's black ("Velvet"?) has a pretty good following.
Wonder if there was some bizarre mix-up in the mixing. Somewhere there is a
chart showing the pH of many popular inks. hmm..

You should contact the seller on this issue, IMO.

it could also be that you've developed a sensitivity to something in the ink
that would not have bothered you in the past. Our immune systems are
amazing.

Yeah, I read somewhere that Bexley just rebottles Private Reserve.

I thought I could have an allergic reaction or something to one of the
dies in private reserve black, but it sure burns like an acid or
strong base. Dunno. It's really the darkest black I've tried, but it
also tends to clog, so I've just finished using my bottle up as a 5%
or 10% additive to weaker inks, but mainly just to get rid of it. This
is the only bottle I've had of it..

I think KCat may be onto something here. According to Greg
Clark's measurements in his ink sampler, the pH for
Bexley black is 7.5 and for Private Reserve black is 7.7.
This is within the range considered to be neutral. Of
course, it could always be from a bad batch or
contaminated, but a sensitivity seems more likely to me.

Two words, Gregg.

Auroral Black.

:-)

okay - more words. That's me, KCat the Verbose

Levenger Black is one of the darkest I've seen other than Aurora but it too
seems to clog. I've heard very good things about Noodler's Black as well
though I haven't tried it. I like Aurora though - excellent flow and very
dark and no clogging that I've noticed.

Anythings possible I suppose when it comes to chemicals - allergies, bad
mixes, etc. Did the burned area feel slippery like soap when you rinsed it?
(more indicative of a base than an acid)

Not slippery like a base, now that I think of it. But in view of mz's
info about the near-neutral ph of Bexley black, I probably just have
an allergy to one of the dyes in this.

Thanks guys for the helpful comments.

I also tried a bottle of PR Velvet Black and ended up giving it to a friend.

I'm *much* happier with Noodler's Black.

Another advantage of Noodler's: it flushes easily, even the waterproof
inks. PR inks (Velvet Black and others) take twice as long to flush
out, in my experience -- although the pen will, eventually, run clear.
Wouldn't give up my Midnight Blues, however. Or my DC Blue.

Would be interested in hearing about DC Blue vs. Noodler's Blue.
Anyone care to compare?
