Proof set wrappers clouded
Hello folks. I have some proof sets from 1959 to 1963 that are
in the original celophane wrappers, but the wrappers are clouded. I took one set out and put it in a plastic holder, and the coins look great. Will I be messing up the worth of these sets if I remove them from the original wrappers? Will it eventually hurt the coins or make them tarnish? I'd sure like to put them into plastic as they look much better. Thanks Bill Roccia |

Thanks Bill Roccia Conventional wisdom says that if it's out of the mint package it's worth less. But... Cruise the completed listings on eBay and see for yourself. I looked at 1959 and 1961 proof sets there and, whether in original mint packaging or in a Capital plastic holder, the prices are about the same. I moved a couple proof sets in that time range to plastic 40 years or so ago, and they don't seem any worse for it. I've got a few proof sets from about that time still in mint packaging that have some tarnish on the silver coins. And some that don't. So obviously, YMMV. Heck, MY MMV... -Alan |

I'll be moving them over, for one because they're much prettier to look at in plastic, and two, I have no intention of selling them. One set has toned beautifully, with the Franklin half a perfectly even golden color. I'd post a pic somewhere, but I know a photo wouldn't do the color justice. Thanks again Bill Roccia |
