Default Help Evaluation Roman Coins purchased on EBay

Hello Everyone,

While I have purchased Roman coins before, this was my first time shelling
out some significant money for a bulk purchase. Without wasting too much
of anyone's time, I wondering what might be estimates on the value of this
collection. I think I got a good price, but I'd like to see what some
experts think.

Best Regards,
Joe

I am definitely not an expert, but they all appear to be pretty common coins
from what I can see in the pics. My guess would be a value around $150 or
so. Of course, there could be something there that I am not seeing and I
could be waaaaay off.

If you go he
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/cat...?vpar=55&pos=0

you will get a pretty good idea what they will retail for

my estimate would be 15 - 25 $ each, some more than 40 $ but i can't see all
details on the coins so hard to say

Salve, Centurion! I don't see anything really rare or high-end there,
but it's also not junk, so you might have gotten a good deal. The
antoniniani on the top two rows should bring between $15-25 each,
possibly a little more. On the bottom, the Hadrian and Trajan denarii
(the first two on the left side) should be $30-40 each, the high grade
Septimius Severus denarius which comes next is also at least a $40
coin because of the high grade. The two Septimius Severus denarii at
the end of that row which are in lower condition would also bring
correspondingly lower prices, maybe around $20 each. (All these are
average retail prices.) The one unknown is the coin that is fourth
from the left on the bottom row- I can't identify it from the portrait
alone, and I can't read the obverse inscription on that photo, so I
can't give an estimate of value. So you may have gotten a good deal,
assuming of course that the coins are genuine- I don't see anything in
those pictures to make me think they're not, although not all fakes
can be detected based on pictures alone. Hope this helps,

Robert A. DeRose, Jr.

Hi Robert,
4th from the left on the bottom is Caracalla. I can't seem to find
the mint mark. I'm not sure about the reverse...Virtus or Athena is my
guess, but I'll have to do more research.
I believe the one your are referring to as Hadrian is actually
Antoninus Pius.

Best Regards,
Joe

Yes, I guess the portrait does resemble Caracalla, and if you can read
the obverse legend then I guess you are right. For some reason the
only thing the portrait was bringing to my mind was one of the
Constantinians, which didn't make sense. I never was very good at
telling the various personifications apart, except of course for
personifications of Parthia (which are obviously the most fascinating
and desirable reverses found on Roman coins).

I believe the one your are referring to as Hadrian is actually
Antoninus Pius.

D'oh! Of course you are right about that. See, that's what Antoninus
Pius gets for presiding over an era of peace and prosperity- 1900
years later some fool goes and confuses him with a more exciting
emperor. Guess I've been spending too much time with my Parthians and
forgetting about the Romans. Maybe I should try and remedy that at
this weekend's Baltimore show.

Anyway, it's a nice little group of Romans, and it sounds like you
know what you are doing in terms of identification. Hope you got a
good deal on them, and don't hesitate to come back here with further
questions, comments, or coin photos to share. I promise to make no
more than two major errors per post
