Just a thought. Virtually all stories about the Brasher Doubloon,
possibly including stuff I wrote decades ago, refer to Brasher as a
neighbor of George Washington in Manhattan.

However, it occurs to me now that in 1787, retired General Washington
would have been living at Mount Vernon in Virginia. He did move to New
York, then the Capital of the United States, for his inauguration as
President in April of 1789, but he would not have been Brasher's
neighbor in 1787.

The coin's were struck by Washington's neighbor. They may not have
been neighbors when the doubloons were made, but Washington had a
residence at 1 Cherry Street in lower Manhattan and Brasher was
virtually next door at 3 Cherry Street (some sources indicate 5 Cherry
Street).

Interesting, Brasher was well-known as a silversmith and local
political figure of the day, but I can not find any portrait of him
listed in museum data bases including New York Historical Society,
Smithsonian, etc.

I've got an original Poloraid black and white picture of Washington's
first inauguration that I bought on eBay. I'll see if I can pick out
Brasher on it.
