If you want to create gold, start with platinum. Or mercury 197 will

There have been at least two celebrated cases of "20th century
alchemists" who claimed to have made gold from mercury using
non-nuclear methods. Both were refuted.

Agreed, so long as they aren't misrepresented as a mined product. I
expect that price will come down considerably in the next 10 years.

Why would someone care? They are both diamonds. One was found in some
dirt. Whoopie.

If you get a visit from a black helicopter soon it will have De Beers on the

The Buick nameplate apparently sells well in China, so it will be
around
for a while. Go figure.

Sells relatively well here, too. Assuming GM stays around, there will
have
to be some intermediate brand to separate Chevrolet from Cadillac, and
Buick

Does there have to be? What's wrong with a carmaker having only one
or
two brands and using model names to distinguish finer grades of snob
factor? Honda does OK with just Honda and Acura.

Trying to have a vehicle to suit all types of possible buyer seems to
have been a mistake made by car makers in the US.

Granted, the major brands do have too many competing models within the
marque.

Very expensive to have a very large range of makes and models, just
think of all those spare parts that have to be stored.

But then most mechanical parts are pretty much interchangeable among
them. The odd thing is that many parts are discontinued about the time
the original is due to break. Like that elusive oven knob that snaps
its shaft after fifteen years.

Toyota make the world's most boring cars but up until recently they
have been the most profitable car maker. Billy

Maybe they followed VW's lead.

I drove a VW Beetle about 35 years ago and it was horrible, how they
managed to sell 20 million of them I'll never know.

The VW Golf is held in high regard in the UK and it's seen as classless,
I have driven one and it's a lovely drive. Billy

We bought a new 1969 Beetle, one of those with the "semiautomatic"
transmission that Consumer Reports claimed made it a lemon. After many
miles, the transmission was about the only thing that had been
trouble-free.

But with Toyota, it wasn't so much that they were boring. People began to
notice the cobwebs over the doors at Toyota dealer service departments and
decided there must be something to that "boring" car.

A very good point as Toyota do have a very high reputation for reliability,
as do Skoda, yes really, no doubt VW ownership has something to do with it.

Skoda is now the brand of choice for UK taxi drivers. Billy

I had several Beetles and a Karman Ghia and I loved them.
They were fun to drive, easy to service and provided miles of
trouble-free service.
The only downside was the atrocious heating system.

I'm still waiting for my windfall from that DeBeers lawsuit. They may not
be able to afford a helicopter after that.

Why would someone care? They are both Brasher Dubloons. One was
made in China last month. Whoopie.

Same logic.

Not in any sort of measurable amounts. The bombs did produce
a few grams of silver, however.

No, not at all actually. Nice try though.
