Sorting 1982 Linc Variety
has become something I wanted to do and now may not care about.
Is there an easy way to distinguish between the 82 Lincoln varieties? When I say easy, my experience would be with the 1858 Flying Eagle cent; large letters have close AM, small letters have wide AM. Case closed. I have about 200 1982's to determine the varieties of - I do have a gram scale and have started weighing some. Any ideas...moneybucks and other references haven't helped much and the pic in the red book...well, my glasses aren't that good. Thanks If you email me use - ringleader at bellsouth dot net Craig |

Thanks If you email me use - ringleader at bellsouth dot net I just looked at my 1982 Lincolns and note that on the large dates, the 2 nestles against the rim, but on the small date there is considerable daylight between 2 and rim. The Redbook pix corroborate that view, but it may not be true of all the billions of cents made that year. As far as separating the bronze from the zinc, you will indeed have to weigh them one way or another. James |

My website will show the difference between the large and small dates
http://coins.richlh.com/Large_and_Small_Dates.htm But to determine whether it is copper or zinc based would require a scale. You can improvise a blance scale using a pencil and a popsicle stick. Just lay the popsicle stick on the pencil, put a known cent on one side and the cent you want to determine on the other. If they balance with the popsicle stick in the center, they're both the same kind, if not they're different. Great feedback, thanks. I decided to set aside an hour, get out the scale and get to it. After about 15 or 20 cents, you could spot the difference in the large/ small letters fairly easily. A few times I had to refer back to my "reference" cent to be sure. But James was on it, the seperation became obvious, especially after stacking and lining up the dates for a close comparison. I weighed out 200 82's and got 20 zinc at 2.5, 180 copper at 3.1. Of the 20 zinc, 10 LL and 10 SL. Of the copper, only 6 SL, rest were LL. I haven't seperated out the D's, that's next. After saving these for a few years figuring I would go thru just this sort of drill, I really enjoyed it. I think I'm going to make as many sets of the variety as I can and just keep them for ed purposes. I know I got an education. |

Thanks If you email me use - ringleader at bellsouth dot net Craig As to large & small dates, that is pretty easy to spot with a little experience, as you state here in a later post. As to copper vs CPZ, the best way to tell is to weigh the coin, but I am too lazy for that. I flip it in the air (using my thumb nail to whack the coin and send it whirling into the air). Copper coins have a melifluous ring while CPZ cents have a blunt thud. As an aside, it is fairly easy to find all of the varieties except for the 1982D zinc large date. When I was living in P-land I found less than one in every 5,000 cents I searched. Now that I am living in D-land it may prove to be a bit easier to find them. It is certainly a lot easier to find S mint cents from the 60's and 70's here. That said, I have searched $75 in cents and found exactly 0 1982D zinc large dates so far. IF |

This educations keeps on and on. As far as weighing, ask my wife about my singing abilities and you'll understand why I weigh and not listen for sounds.. BTW, you got a 82D zinc large date or 2 for sale? Craig |
