ps- being you own a DVD rental store, you stand to make money buying a
few DVD's of SWTR and renting them out my advice to other trackers is, when the movie comes out in rental stores, rent it and dub yourself a high quality DVD-R or VHS copy. |

"my advice to other trackers is, when the movie comes out in rental
stores, rent it and dub yourself a high quality DVD-R or VHS copy." Make up your mind. You go on and on about how worthless the film is...then you end with "make yourself a dub copy." That is like me saying...THREE'S COMPANY is the dumbest TV show ever and not worth watching...I strongly suggest that everyone STEAL the first-season DVDs when they come out. Furthermore, to my knowledge nobody in that film verbally identifies themslelves as being homosexual, therefore any assumption that any of them are as such is based on stereotypes relating to their attire or mannerisms. Being a 100% heterosexual man who was often mistaken for being homosexual in high school just because I was short, neat, and wore Hawaiian shirts every day, I take exception to that premise. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. My two cents, for anyone who has not yet seen the film: I think it is great. This film inspired me ten years ago to re-enter the world of 8-Tracks. I think that it captures the spirit of 8-Track collecting pretty well; at least the way it was in 1994. It talks to a lot of different people in a lot of different parts of the country. There are different age groups represented and lots of different music is discussed. There's history, trivia, humor, light technical info, and humor. Bottom line: If you like 8-Tracks you will like the film. But, that's just me. I don't normally recommend things to people. |

Yep, I do own a dvd store and am bringing in a copy to rent.
One more thing about the "homosexual" aspects of the film, and I'm giving it a rest. Listening for Russ' commentary he included the nightclub scene to show all the different communities that embraced the 8-track culture. I also have a feeling it was used to pad the film as well. Like you said this is a timepiece of 1990's slackerdom, complete with Bettie Page hairdos, thrift-store clothes and obsessions with all things 70s. And it's great. I'm in my late 30s and immediately started collecting 8-tracks again after watching this film a month ago and imagine others will to. marc |

it's worth dubbing to have a copy if you are an 8-track fan, just to
say "yeh, I saw that..." show that movie to 10 people, and you'll have 9 people that just think the movie is weird, and they'll also think maybe you are weird too... as a movie, it's a zero- for a few 8-track tidbits, it's ok |

good points- let me digress...
Russ Forster did some good things for the 8-track format and community- he made a movie that showcased the format to some extent (although not a stellar job by any stretch, it was lacking on technical aspects). He also got the 8-track hobbyists together on a national level. Where Russ went wrong, was injecting the gay liberal slacker lifestyle into the movie. A very very small percentage of 8-track hobbyists are gay or slackers. The movie made it look like 90% of 8-trackers are gay, weird, losers, lazy, and/or unemployed. 8-track is not the format of losers. There is an older generation from the 1960-70's era, who cherish the format, and enjoyed it when it was "modern" and new- and still have all their tapes from that era. I am among them. When the "newbies" of the 1990's were calling Russ the "father of 8-tracks", that raised an eyebrow from people such as myself. It's downright laughable- Russ was not even into 8-tracks until after the format was obsolete during the 1980's- and the format made its debut circa 1965. One of the 8-track sites on the net did a survey to find out which generation contained the most 8-track hobbyists- the survey showed that the 1960-70's generation was the largest in the 8-track community. Yes, Russ did indeed "pad" the film with gay/lesbian/liberal undertones- and the film's reputation and ratings suffered because of it. I guess Russ hangs out with those types so he wants to parade and showcase their lifestyles. Well that liberal lifestyle turns off about 60% of all the 8-trackers out there, who find it morally repulsive and lame. Being a slacker is nothing to brag about. Someone who is a lifetime slacker, is a very sad person indeed. |

Charlie, with all due respect:
show that movie to 10 people, and you'll have 9 people that just think the movie is weird, and they'll also think maybe you are weird too... --The movie IS weird. At least a little bit, because it is about a WEIRD topic. Collecting an audio tape format that went "extinct" two decades ago is, by conventional standards, WEIRD. What is wrong with weird? as a movie, it's a zero- for a few 8-track tidbits, it's ok --Charlie, do you mind me asking what YOUR 8-track movie would be like, if you made one? (although not a stellar job by any stretch, it was lacking on technical aspects). --SO WAS THE 8-TRACK. Where Russ went wrong, was injecting the gay liberal slacker lifestyle into the movie. --Again, nobody in the film identifies themselves or is identified by the narrator as being homosexual, liberal or a slacker. Most of the people interviewed allude to having some sort of employment. To my recollection there is no mention of politics whatsoever. While there are some people depicted in the film that may have stereotypical mannersims attributed to homosexuals, nobody makes any statements glorifying the homosexual lifestyle relating to 8-Tracks or otherwise. Therefore, I assume you are espousing the following opinions: 1. People who act in a way which I percieve as odd are gay. 2. People who hold employment that I percieve to be below my own station are slackers. 3. People who I percieve to be gay, a slacker or who are otherwise of a different disposition than myself are liberal...and liberals are bad. You are simultaneously complaining of generalizations made by another person about a particular group of people while making generalizations of your own about several other particular groups of people. "Yes, Russ did indeed "pad" the film with gay/lesbian/liberal undertones- and the film's reputation and ratings suffered because of it." --So far you are the only person who has anything bad to say about it. Read the reviews on amazon.com...granted, there are only two...but they are both positive. "A very very small percentage of 8-track hobbyists are gay or slackers. The movie made it look like 90% of 8-trackers are gay, weird, losers, lazy, and/or unemployed." --Again, Charlie, the assertion that Russ's subjects were 90% gay/liberal/slacker is based solely on your own prejiduces and not bsed on any confirmed fact or any admission from the people in question. "8-track is not the format of losers." --Nobody ever said it was. There is an older generation from the 1960-70's era, who cherish the format, and enjoyed it when it was "modern" and new- and still have all their tapes from that era. --Charlie, I hate to differ with you...but it was that generation that threw away all their tapes and gave them to thrift stores for the next generation to discover. It has been my experience over the past 20 years that the people who were part of the 8-Track generation are the ones who badmouth it the most. I am among them. When the "newbies" of the 1990's were calling Russ the "father of 8-tracks", that raised an eyebrow from people such as myself. It's downright laughable- Russ was not even into 8-tracks until after the format was obsolete during the 1980's- and the format mde its debut circa 1965." --As were many of us. "Russ hangs out with those types so he wants to parade and showcase their lifestyles. Well that liberal lifestyle turns off about 60% of all the 8-trackers out there, who find it morally repulsive and lame." --Charlie, you have no call to make these statements. You don't know Who Russ hangs out with, and I doubt you have any solid market research to back up your claims as to what percentage of Trackers agree or disagree with the homosexual/slacker/liberal overtones you claim are present. "One of the 8-track sites on the net did a survey to find out which generation contained the most 8-track hobbyists- the survey showed that the 1960-70's generation was the largest in the 8-track community." --I think you'll find a few liberals hanging out in that demographic. I could make many, many generalizations about conservatives here but I will refrain. "Being a slacker is nothing to brag about. Someone who is a lifetime slacker, is a very sad person indeed." --This may be, but you have failed to present a solid example of slackerdom in the film in question. As always, my comments are respectfully submitted with no offense intended. |
