Wow, just acquired the rarest item I have encountered in 21 years of
professional full time numismatics! A 1902 plain back $20 note from
First National Bank of Danville, VA. It's in a new CGA holder graded
30. The searches through auction catalogs and online turn up only my
note, and one other - which is an AG-G rag. (look at the photo of
the only other known note on my auction listing)

Asking price is $4,500, same as an auction price for a similar note
from the same city (different bank) with population 2.

Serious offers considered.

Thanks for looking

Not knowing much about National Bank notes, why is this called a "plain
back?" I see that there's a rather large empty area, but is this an
error? Or did most versions of this note have something printed there
but a smaller number didn't? I Googled "plain back notes" and found
many references, but not a good explanation. Thanks.

"Date back" notes have the sate that Congress authorized the carter period.

See

Later notes omitted this, thus "Plain Back"
