Nickels rescued
Not a great number of orphans adopted in a $20 roll search today, but
marked by their age! 1959-D (160,738,240) 1957-D (136,828,900) 1954 (47,917,350) 1952-D (30,638,000) 1949-D (36,498,000) Three relatively small mintage orphans, there. The 1949-D is totally black, and appears to grade on the high side of VG-8. When I went to deposit it in a nickel tube in the Jefferson vault, I realized that it's only the third nickel of that year I've nabbed. The mintmark is crisp and distinct, and is not, unfortunately, the D/S variety that commands a premium. Alan 'kept it anyway' |

At the bank yesterday I passed on a 1946 XF that on had in my drawer. Nice
coin, even wear, figure it was my chance to let someone to find it, and start collecting. Only trouble is since a 46 and a 96 have the same basic design, one is really going to look at the date to see something different. What caught my eye, was the darkish grey of the 46 when stacked on its side with the rest of the nickels. Dan769 |

Like anyone thought about *me* when they were socking away 1910-S Lincolns in AU, and putting 1911 Gold Quarter Eagles in safes, or making hollow legs in the piano to hide all their Vermont Half Dollars. Ha! All you've done, Dan, is compassionlessly cast a elderly and overworked Jefferson nickel back onto the Sea of Commerce. It's not on it's way to inspire a new generation of collectors! It's on it's way to *circular scarring* in parking meters and coin slots. Only trouble is since a 46 and a 96 have the same basic design, one is really going to look at the date to see something different. What caught my eye, was the darkish grey of the 46 when stacked on its side with the rest of the nickels. It was crying out for help, Dan. You could have used any 1998 in your pocket to buy it's freedom, given it retirement. None of the 1946 Jeffs here at the orphanage will ever need to work again. They will, in the year 2050, be honored and cherished pieces of American history, residing in albums and slabs and stasis bubbles trading at no less than 2x face. ;-) Alan 'nasty headmaster of the numismatic orphanage' |

a 1946 XF ... trouble is since a 46 and a 96 have the same basic design, one is really going to look at the date to see something different. One word: "mimtmark". on the '46, it would be on the reverse, to the right of Monticello; on the '96, near the date. There was no mint mark in '46 for Philly, but in '96 there is, so it's still the notable difference. 8-] Coin Saver |
