Why are Maple Leaf sets selling at discount on Ebay?
I am looking to purchase a 2003 Hologram Silver Maple Leaf set.
The Canadian Mint is selling them for $115 USD plus shipping. The fact that they are only minting 30,000 sets interests me. Out of curiosity, I checked Ebay, and the auctions are closing at $85-$90 USD for these sets. U.S. proof sets sell on Ebay for more than then mint sells them for, as would be expected. I am looking to buy this set as an investment, but the Ebay discount concerns me. Why are people selling them so cheaply? Were they able to buy them cheaper than the mint is selling them for? Should I stick to U.S. proof sets for an investment? I'm confused. Please educate me! Thanks, Tim |

It's my understanding that most but not all Canadian coins minted go
down in value. I would stick to buying from the US mint for investment purposes IMO. Ed |

Many Canadian Mint products go down in value. The demand just isn't there. The special coins manufactured just for collectors are some of the poorest investments.

While I don't know how or why, several retailers were able to obtain
this set at a discount- you can buy it for $79.95 or so from Coast to Coast and others. As for the merits of Canadian coins' collector value, it's a mixed bagto say the least; several items have gone down whereas others have done quite well (the 2003 Niagra Falls hologram is selling for $20 over issue price already). -Steve |

How could you resist classic designs like these though? http://www.pacifier.com/~craton/1894cnlrgcnt.jpg http://www.pacifier.com/~craton/1916cnlrgcnt.jpg -- Jason Craton ---- CONECA N-3407 --- WINS #5 --------------------------- Interested in error coins? http://www.error-coins.com - A work in progress (lack of progress really). Resistance is futile . That's why I have so many.
What's the deal with the heart shaped toning on the 1894? I gotta says its cool. Paul (Admires the cent of a woman.) "J. Craton" wrote in message ... it is my understanding that the RCMint in its lack of wisdom, sells to the
public at a price, and at the same time sells to volume dealers for LESS.......so the dealers can make a profit..........this often results in the public being able to buy for less from the private sector..........it is embarrassing as aCdn ........but then our mint has been embarrassing us for some time now. |
