FA: Large Swiss Sawback Bayonet, c. 1850s
Large Swiss Sawback Bayonet, c. 1850s
This huge Model 1850s Swiss Sawback Bayonet is in excellent condition. It is complete in original leather scabbard. The blade measures 20 inches long x 1 ¾ inches Wide. The overall length is 25 ½ inches. The blade has a large shallow fluted edge on one side and flat on the other side. The backside of the blade is saw-tooth. The blade is clean with no rust. It is marked, "Gebr. Weyersberg, Solingen" on the blade near the cross-guard. There is also the "Swiss Cross" stamping. The other side of the blade is marked, (1848) and (80) near the cross-guard. The cross-guard is solid brass. The grip is serrated wood held by 5 brass pins or rivets. There is absolutely no rust or pitting to the blade and no damage to the grip or cross-guard. The scabbard is in equally excellent condition. It is leather with a brass throat and drag. There is no damage to the scabbard, no loose stitching and no damage to the leather. Overall condition of bayonet and scabbard is excellent. This is the first large bladed Saw-Tooth type bayonet I have ever seen. This bayonet weighs over 2 pounds.
