Default Uncleaned ancient coins...

Looking at previous posts in this newsgroup, most of you
seem to be opposed to buying lots of ancient uncleaned
coins on eBay. I read post after post of negative
experiences.

Am I the only person who's had a positive experience
from buying uncleaned coins? I buy them relatively
cheaply at $1 or $2 each, and every time I have been
able to resell them for $5-$30 each after cleaning.

Why's everyone so down on uncleaned ancients?

The ones I had experience with (more than two different sellers but less than 5)
......... I had a great time, learned a lot but got no keepers.

I will do it again too but not in the expectation of adding a coin to my collection.

I have no objections to uncleaned Roman coins and recommend them to any who
would enjoy the experience. I don't recommend them as a means of adding nice coins
to a collection.
it would be cheaper in the long run to pick the already cleaned ones for suitable
coins.

just my experience

I was also pretty excited about the 6 ancients that I bought for $2 a
piece a year ago. I set them in Olive oil for 3 months, dried them, and
tried to chip the crush off with a dental tool type of pick. I realized
that this stuff is not easily removed and ended up scratching the hell
out of that thing. I like the idea of something that old that you can
actually own, but I lost patience with that hobby. My local coin shop
has a box of perfectly cleaned ones in a box for $7 a piece. All smaller
than a dime.

I only just understood your implication... Do I sell uncleaned coins
myself? No. And I will say
this about uncleaned coin dealers - do not buy from sellers who make
"gold found" claims.
If gold coins actually occurred in uncleaned lots with any frequency,
why would the seller
be selling them to you at $1 each?

"Silver found" claims are more believable - I find about 2 silvers in
every 100 uncleaned
coins.

cheers

I'd say your uncleaned coin experience is atypical, to put it mildly. If
anyone is considering a career in cleaning ancients after reading this, I'd
suggest not quitting your day job.
