Applications Being Accepted
for Intaglio Engraving Course
at ANA Summer Seminar
Expense-paid opportunity offered to qualified applicants

Applications for a one-of-a-kind course on intaglio engraving are
being accepted for the 2004 American Numismatic Association (ANA) Summer
Seminar in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"Intaglio engraving is a very detailed process, and training in the
art form is very difficult to find," says Gail Baker, ANA education
director. "The ANA is pleased to be able to offer this class in memory of
Gilroy Roberts, a renowned engraver and artist who worked at the United
States Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and was the 9th Chief
Engraver of the U.S. Mint.
"In addition, we again are fortunate to have Christopher Madden, a
bank note engraver from the BEP, as our instructor," Baker adds.
The expense-paid class is held in two parts, with the first session
offered in week one of the 2004 Summer Seminar (June 26-July 2), and the
second session conducted at the 2005 Seminar.
"Students selected for this unique class will, through hands-on
participation, learn the delicate process of plate engraving, which is
used by the BEP to create the nation's paper money," Baker says. "By
etching their own designs and creating intaglio prints pulled from their
own engravings, students will cultivate an appreciation of the materials
and techniques of this vanishing art.
"In addition, students can exhibit and show for sale other artworks
they have created," Baker says.
Six successful applicants will receive full scholarships (including
tuition, room and board, and transportation reimbursement up to $400) for
each year of the course. Potential students must submit an application
(available online at
www.money.org/intaglioapp.html) and four samples of
their art work (photos, slides, etc.) for assessment by the selection
committee. Applicants need not be professional artists.
The ANA is offering 40 other courses and 17 evening mini-seminars at
its 2004 Summer Seminar on the campus of Colorado College. Session I will
be held June 26-July 2 and Session II, July 3-9. A complete course catalog
is available on the ANA website (www.money.org) and in the December issue
of the Association's monthly magazine, Numismatist.
"The ANA Summer Seminar is an opportunity for numismatic scholarship
and camaraderie, offering students a wide and varied selection of
week-long courses suited for anyone from the curious beginner to the most
advanced numismatist," Baker says. "The low weekly fee beginning at $579
includes class tuition, a room in Loomis Hall dormitory (double occupancy)
for six nights (Saturday to Friday), and all meals. Students also have the
option of upgrading to single rooms or selecting air-conditioned,
off-campus accommodations in a nearby bed & breakfast or upscale hotel.
Some financial aid is available to members who are active in the hobby.
Call the Seminar office (719-632-2646) for an application or visit us
online (www.money.org/sumsemfin.html)."
Baker encourages students to sign up early because classes fill
quickly. Each session is limited to 300 registrants.
