Default Green & Blue Coloring - Panama Pacific Expo 1 Cent - Scott #397

Has anyone heard of U.S. Scott #397 Panama Pacific Expo 1 Cent stamp
having Blue coloring on the left and green coloring on the right?

This coloring shows up under natural light or with a flashlight, but
not under fluorescent light.

The blue appears very close to the 5 cent stamp of the same series.

Thanks, Kent

Could you please post a scan of the stamp for us and post it
online for us to see? It might be easier to say.

I need to find a website where I can post images.

In the meantime, I will email the image to you.

I would guess that one of two thongs happened.
Either the stamp lay in bright sunlight for a long time,
but was partly covered, so that the green side
was not exposed to the sunlight or the left half of
the stamp was exposed to some chemical that
caused a colour change.

(green - yellow = blue)

It is not unknown for someone to take hydrogen peroxide or chlorine
bleach on a cotton swab and rub it over a stamp, then try to pass off the
stamp as a "rare variety". In fact, some collectors still swear by
adding a couple drops of bleach to soaking water (NOT a good idea). The
fact that this stamp is only half blue means Blair is almost certainly
correct with his evaluation.

Blair, Joshua,

Thanks for the theories on the color change.

The stamp is part of my sister's album which was probably put together
around 1948-65.

It's unlikely that she did anything to the stamp but it would have
been around for three to four decades prior to that.
