1961 Topps #6, Ed Roebuck
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ed Roebuck's 1961 Topps card #6 is shown here, front and back: http://home.triad.rr.com/ovis/images/Roebuck-6.jpg http://home.triad.rr.com/ovis/images/Roebuck-6b.jpg Ed Roebuck was the winning pitcher in the last game the Dodgers would ever play with Brooklyn in front of their name. The game was played at Philadelphia on September 28, 1957. (The last game at Ebbets Field was played four days earlier.) Ed was a relief pitcher for the Dodgers. He came up to Brooklyn in 1955 and was with them when they moved to Los Angeles in 1958. He had to sit out the 1959 season with a shoulder injury, but came back in 1960. In 1961, the year of this card, Ed only pitched in 5 games, a total of 9 innings, when it was decided he would sit out the rest of that year also, with the shoulder problem. The Dodgers used Ed as a scout that year. He came back in 1962 and went 10-2, with an ERA of 3.09, and finished 1st in the league in Won/Loss percentage. He didn't lose his first game until September 25th of that year. Ed was traded to the Senators in the middle of the season in 1963, was sent to the Phillies early in 1964, and played with them until 1966. As the cartoon says, Ed did lead the league with 10 wild pitches in 1956. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Wade |
