1961 Topps #11, Curt Simmons
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Curt Simmons' 1961 Topps #11 card is shown here, both front and back: http://home.triad.rr.com/ovis/images/011_Simmons-a.jpg http://home.triad.rr.com/ovis/images/011_Simmons-b.jpg In 1947, at the age of 18, Curt was brought up to the Phillies. This made Curt the youngest player to play in the league that year. (He was the second youngest to play in 1948, and the 4th youngest in '49) Curt was a member of Philadelphia's pennant winning "Whiz Kids" in 1950, but could not play in the World Series that year because of being called up to military service. The lefty had to sit out the 1951 season with a sore arm, but came back with a .282 ERA in 1952 to finish in the top-10 in the league in that stat, as well as leading the league in shutouts, with 6, and being named to the N.L. All-Star Team that year. In fact, curt was in the top-10 in ERA nine times in his career, top-10 in wins six times, top-10 in shutouts eight times, and was named to the All Star team three times, 1952, 1953, and 1957. There are also a few dubious highlights from Curt's career. Stan Musial got his 2,000th hit off of him, Ernie Banks and Willie Mays both hit their 400th home run off of Curt, and in the 1964 World Series, he gives up home runs to Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle on successive pitches in a Cardinals loss to New York. Curt was also a better than average hitter for a pitcher. In 1961, the year of this card, Curt hit for a .303 batting average, getting 20 hits for 66 at bats. After Curt's arm went bad again in 1960, the Phillies released him, and he was picked up by the Cards. He pitched for them into the 1966 season when he was sold to the Cubs. The Cubs sold him to the Angels toward the end of the '67 season, and he was released after the season was over. Curt had a lifetime 3.54 ERA. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Wade |
